My participation in the Phone Photography Contest! - #102: My peaceful afternoon with Diocletian after a long day in the laboratory [Eng/Esp]

What's up, Feel Good community! We're almost at the weekend, and I'm absolutely exhausted. Yesterday I had a full day of work in the lab. I arrived at 6:30 am and had two pastries I bought at the cafeteria with coffee I made in the lab. Luckily, my supervisor always leaves ground coffee in the office, and since I was the only one in the lab, I made enough for myself, the student who might be visiting, and my supervisor. I wasn't in a good mood because I had slept very poorly the night before, but after those pastries and a good cup of coffee, I was 100% ready to start working in the lab.

The reconstruction work inside the institute finished last year, and due to the situation we experienced in Venezuela at the beginning of this year, we couldn't go up to work until well into February. Fortunately, I left most of the laboratory equipment and materials covered and protected from dust, which is the worst enemy of the high-precision equipment we have in the lab. So, most of our work consisted of dusting the equipment, cleaning the lab, and starting to reorganize the materials. At the same time, I had to train the new student who is starting to work with us, so I had to explain the protocols for using and calibrating the equipment and the entire inventory of reagents we have on the shelves. As you can see, this is a job that will take us several weeks, but since we are relatively free of teaching duties, we can take the time to refurbish the lab.

The process was quite interesting. We discarded a lot of material that was simply obsolete, while other items were antique collector's pieces, like an HP calculator from the 80s that my tutor had since she was a student, along with 3.5-inch floppy disks. I didn't dare throw them away because they're vintage pieces worth preserving. We were at this stage until 4 pm when we had to take the bus down to the university. I spent the rest of the afternoon there until my taxi arrived to take me home.

The taxi took longer than expected, but just as I was sitting on the benches in the dean's office, I came across this little tuxedo kitten. At the beginning of the week, I saw another one that was also a tuxedo, but this one was completely new and clearly had just arrived because it was so neglected. He approached me very politely and let me pet him. I gave him some of the cake I had bought that morning, and he ate it like there was no tomorrow. That confirmed for me that he was not only new but also very hungry.

I decided to name him Diocletian, after the Roman emperor, and with some of my students, we got him some cat food and water. The students wanted to take him to a shelter, but I suggested they keep him at the university. In all my time at the university, since I was a student, I had never seen a tuxedo cat living on our campus, so I asked them to keep him here. So, as the afternoon passed and I waited for the taxi, Diocleciano stayed by my side. I've been told that cats who have a hard life on the streets appreciate being adopted or cared for. I hope that in the end he decides to stay with us at the faculty. With time and the care of students and professors, he will look better and seem like a different cat. Therefore, I wanted to dedicate this post of Phone photography #102 to him to compare the before and after of this mischievous little fellow.

Que tal comunidad de Feel Good! Ya estamos a cerca del fin de semana, y estoy literalmente destruido, ayer tuve un día completo de trabajo en el laboratorio, llegué a las 6:30 am y desayuné 2 tortas que compré en el cafetín con café que preparé en el laboratorio, afortunadamente mi tutora siempre deja un café molido en la oficina para preparar y como era el único en el laboratorio preparé suficiente para mi, la eventual estudiante que vendría y mi tutora. No estaba de buen humor ya que había dormido bastante mal la moche anterior, pero después de probar esas tortas y una buena taza de café estaba al 100% para comenzar a trabajar en el laboratorio.

Los trabajos de reconstrucción dentro del instituto terminaron el año pasado, y por la contingencia que sufrimos en Venezuela a comienzos de este año no pudimos subir a trabajar sino hasta bien entrado el mes de febrero. Afortunadamente dejé la mayoría de los equipos y materiales del laboratorio cubiertos y resguardados del polvo que es el peor enemigo de los equipos de alta precisión que tenemos en el laboratorio, así que la mayoría del trabajo que tuvimos fue el de desempolvar los equipos, ir limpiando el laboratorio y comenzar a reordenar los materiales. Tuve al mismo tiempo que entrenar a la nueva estudiante que esta empezando a trabajar con nosotros, así que tuve que explicarle los protocolos de uso y calibración de los equipos todo el inventario de reactivos que tenemos en los estantes. Como pueden ver este es un trabajo que nos tomará varias semanas, pero como estamos bastante liberados de carga docente, podemos tomarnos el tiempo para reacondicionar el laboratorio.

El proceso fue algo muy interesante, descartamos mucho material que simplemente ya estaba en desuso, otras ya eran piezas antiguas de coleccionismo como una calculadora Hp de los 80 que tenía mi tutora desde que era estudiante, junto a disquets 3 1/2, no me atreví a botarlos porque ya son piezas vintage que vale la pena guardar. Estuvimos en este proceso hasta las 4 pm cuando ya teníamos que bajar a la universidad en el transporte, allí termine de pasar la tarde hasta que llegara mi taxi para irme a casa.

El taxi se demoró más de lo que esperaba, pero justo mientras estaba sentado en los bancos del decanato me encontré con este pequeño gatito tuxedo, al comenzar la semana vi otro que también era tuxedo, pero este es completamente nuevo y se notaba que es recien llegado porque esta super descuidado. Se me acercó muy amablemente y se dejó hacer cariño, le dí un poco de la torta que había comprado en la mañana y se lo comió como si no hubiera un mañana, eso me confirmó que no solo estaba recién llegado sino que estaba hambriento.

Decidí llamarlo Diocleciano como el emperador romano y con algunos de mis estudiantes, le conseguimos un poco de gatarina y agua, los chicos querían llevarlo a un refugio pero les propuse que lo dejaran en la facultad, porque en todo el tiempo que tengo en la facultad, desde que era estudiante, jamás había visto que un gato tuxedo hiciera vida en nuestros espacios, así que les pedí que lo mantuvieran en la facultad. Así, mientras pasaba la tarde y esperaba el taxi, Diocleciano se mantuvo al lado mío, me han contado que los gatos que tienen una dura vida en las calles, aprecian cuando son adoptados o cuidados, espero que al final decida quedarse con nosotros en la facultad, con el tiempo y el cuidado de estudiantes y profesores, tendrá un mejor aspecto y parecerá otro gato, por tanto quise dedicarle este post de Phone photography #102 para comparara el antes y el después de este pequeño travieso.

Esta fue mi participación en el phone photography de esta semana amigos, espero que les haya gustado, los días últimamente han sido bastante agobiantes, pero siempre hay pequeños detalles como mi nuevo amigo Diocleciano que al final hacen que valga la pena continuar con la faena diaria. Saludos.
