Últimamente en Cuba el paisaje de las cocinas y comercios ha cambiado, ese refresco en polvo que durante años era casi un desconocido, se ha vuelto un compañero frecuente en las dietas del pueblo; la crisis aprieta, el azúcar escasea, y la gente tiene que busca cómo endulzar un poquito la vida o simplemente darle algo de sabor al día.

Pero tanta necesidad también trae otro problema silencioso: ¿qué hacer con tantos sobres vacíos? Son pequeños es cierto, pero cuando el consumo sube, y se empiezan a juntar, la basura se enriquece de un material que no se biodegrada fácilmente, si te pones a pensar, en un edificio de cinco plantas, en una cominidad, en un país, solamente en una semana la cantidad de estos sobres que van a parar a los desechos, creo que podría ser impresionante, pudieran parecer inofensivos, pero ese plástico metalizado acumulado, es un problema para el medio ambiente.

Lately in Cuba, the landscape of kitchens and businesses has changed. That powdered drink mix that for years was almost unknown has become a frequent companion in people's diets; the crisis is tightening, sugar is scarce, and people have to find a way to sweeten life a little or simply add some flavor to the day.

But such great need also brings another silent problem: what to do with so many empty wrappers? They are small, it's true, but when consumption rises and they start to pile up, the waste stream becomes enriched with a material that doesn't biodegrade easily. If you think about it, in a five-story building, in a community, in a whole country, just in one week the number of these wrappers that end up in the trash could be impressive. They might seem harmless, but that accumulated metallic plastic is a problem for the environment.

Y bueno hace unas semanas, con la complicidad de unos amigos, nos propusimos ir recolectandolos para darle algún uso; pense en una bolsa, de esas que a menudo se rompen o que a veces no tenemos a mano, y usamos para ir a las compras de víveres, o para trasladar algo afín con su valor de uso.

La idea era simple, unir esos pequeños rectángulos para crear algo más grande y útil. Fue de hay que salió esta bolsa para las compras, valga la redundancia.

Well, a few weeks ago, with the complicity of some friends, we set out to collect them to give them a use. I thought of a bag – the kind that often breaks or that we sometimes don't have on hand to use for grocery shopping or for carrying something suitable for its practical value.

The idea was simple: join those small rectangles to create something larger and useful. That's how this shopping bag, pardon the pun, came to be.

PASO A PASO / STEP BY STEP
1. El más minucioso: lavar y secar bien cada sobre, para eliminar los restos de polvo de azúcar.

The most meticulous step: wash and dry each wrapper well to remove any remaining powder residue.

2. Con la máquina de coser unir los sobres, para formar piezas más grandes.

Using a sewing machine, join the wrappers together to form larger pieces.

3. Para darle cuerpo a la bolsa, necesitaba tres partes. Dos rectángulos que serían el frente y la espalda de la bolsa, además de una tercera pieza más larga y más estrecha, como una tira.

To give the bag structure, I needed three parts. Two rectangles that would be the front and back of the bag, plus a third longer and narrower piece, like a strip.

4. Pero no solo con ellos, se reforzó el interior con otro nailon, de esos más resistentes que vienen en los paquetes de pollo o de arroz, esa doble capa le daría firmeza, para que al cargar algo pesado, no se valla romper con facilidad.

But not only with them; the inside was reinforced with another nylon, the more resistant kind that comes in chicken or rice packaging. This double layer would give it firmness so that when carrying something heavy, it wouldn't break easily.

5. Con unos recortes de tela reforzar la parte superior, por donde se le colocaran las asas.

Using some fabric scraps to reinforce the top part, where the handles would be attached.

6. Unir las dos piezas rectangulares con la tercera, que es como una faja que le da profundidad a la bolsa en cuestión, transformando dos dimensiones en tres.

Join the two rectangular pieces with the third one, which is like a gusset that gives depth to the bag, transforming two dimensions into three.

7. Para fortalecer los bordes y lograr una mejor presentación, con otros recortes de tela, se revistieron los extremos de la unión de las piezas.

To strengthen the edges and achieve a better finish, the ends of the seams were covered with other fabric scraps.

8. Confeccionar unas asas, en este caso también se le hicieron de tela, y fijar las mismas en los extremos superiores, y listo.

Make the handles, in this case also made of fabric, and attach them to the top edges. And that's it.

Ver la bolsa terminada, con sus colores brillantes me llenó de una satisfacción extraña, no era solo una bolsa, sino el esfuerzo de varios amigos, era un montón de basura que dejó de serlo, como un pequeño gesto para con él medio ambiente. En un país donde a veces parece que todo se deshace, coser esos pedacitos fue una manera de juntar voluntades, de tejer resistencia, demostrar que con un poco de ingenio y paciencia, hasta el sobre más insignificante puede transformarse en algo útil.

Seeing the finished bag, with its bright colors, filled me with a strange satisfaction. It wasn't just a bag, but the effort of several friends; it was a bunch of trash that stopped being trash, a small gesture for the environment. In a country where it sometimes seems like everything is falling apart, sewing those little pieces together was a way to unite wills, to weave resistance, to demonstrate that with a little ingenuity and patience, even the most insignificant wrapper can be transformed into something useful.
