Sí, tristemente acabó el Clásico Mundial de Béisbol y ahora es tiempo de regresar a los spring trainings. Pero antes de ello, las últimas píldoras sobre el WBC: los hermanos Wilson y William Contreras hicieron la fila juntos para recibir la medalla de oro que los acredita como campeones mundiales. No es cualquier gesto. Es una declaración universal sobre nuestro gentilicio como venezolanos. Me explico. En los miles de terrenos de béisbol y en las calles alrededor de la geografía nacional, miles de niños (y hermanos como ellos), sueñan con jugar pelota de grandes ligas a un alto nivel. Toman un palo de escoba y retan a sus amiguitos a lanzar tapas (chapas) de refresco, para "batear" la "pelota" lejos del home y poder correr las bases a lo Eugenio Suárez alzando los brazos como héroe. Y el que ese par de hermanos lo hayan hecho en televisión -hacer fila juntos para recibir el premio- proyecta una fraternal hermandad sin parangón. El mayor de ellos, siendo un bate de mucho respeto cambiado ahora a los Medias Rojas de Boston y William, convertido en uno de los mejores receptores del juego con los Cerveceros de Milwaukee, dicho por la propia MLB. Fueron niños que como hermanos soñaban llegar a la élite y lo lograron. Son muy pocos los que pueden presumir de ello.

     Los fanáticos japoneses dieron una lección de humildad al hinchar por el equipo venezolano. En las redes sociales muchos de ellos se mostraron vistiendo la camiseta nacional en la final. Su cultura milenaria les dicta que si ellos perdieron ante alguien, es porque deben ser mejores que ellos y deben aprender del ganador. Muy distinto a la cultura occidental, donde el orgullo prevalece ante la derrota. En ese sentido como redactor, quiero confesar que el manager Omar López jamás ha sido santo de nuestra devoción. Nuestra animadversión viene desde mucho antes que cometiera el error, de dejar a Silvino Bracho lanzar la pelota que Trea Turner botó del parque, para anotarse el grand slam que permitió a los Estados Unidos vencer a Venezuela en cuartos de final del Clásico Mundial 2023. Pero el hombre a pesar de cometer errores garrafales ante República Dominicana, se redimió con el título de campeón dirigiendo milimétricamente al equipo, dejando en claro que aprendió de los errores. Por ello, no nos queda más remedio que reconocer su mérito y empezar a verlo con mejores ojos. Errar es de humanos y rectificar nos hace mejores personas.

     Ver las lágrimas en el rostro de Miguel Cabrera, fue una de las imágenes que más nos conmovió, de la cantidad enorme de postales televisivas recibidas vía streaming (Por cierto, la transmisión rompió todos los registros de audiencia anteriores, poniendo a pensar a la MLB). Y el contexto de esas lágrimas tiene historia. Él había jugado las 5 versiones previas del Clásico, sin poder convertir a Venezuela en campeón. Para un hombre que es un seguro Salón de la Fama, tiene que haber sido un impacto muy enorme en su psique, ver que otros lograron como peloteros lo que él no pudo. Por supuesto lo logró como "hitting coach" del equipo, guiando a la nueva generación de brillantes muchachos al bate, enseñando sus "secretos de bateo" que le llevaron al estrellato.      El spring training jamás se detuvo, es sólo que la atención del béisbol giró la cabeza hacia el Clásico Mundial. Muchas cosas han sucedido detrás de bastidores y les iremos contando, con el pasar de los días hasta el arranque de la temporada pautado para el miércoles de la semana entrante. Por lo pronto, ayer comenzó el "Spring Breakout", un especie de mini-exhibición que va a su tercer año del 19 al 22 de Marzo. Cuatro días donde las ligas del Cactus y la Toronja, reciben a peloteros prospectos de las menores, mezclados en los rosters de los equipos grandes. Es la oportunidad de mirar a los mejores prospectos del mañana, intentar demostrar sus habilidades, con el fin de justificar las expectativas que sobre ellos gravitan en el mundo del béisbol.
