Shadow Hunters SMASh Contest - Round #433 Dance of Shadows and Concrete [Eng/Esp]
Greetings, esteemed Shadow Hunters community! Today, as every Saturday, I've gotten into the habit of sharing some of the shadows I've been hunting in my daily life this week. The truth is, I haven't been out much. I had to go out on Tuesday to assess the damage from the double earthquake in Caracas, then on Thursday when I went grocery shopping for some food and vegetables, and this morning I had to go out to pick up a bag of groceries my mother received for retiring from her job, which needs to be collected in the east of the city. So we went early to pick her up so we wouldn't spend all morning waiting in line for that bag of groceries. The morning was quite clear and the sun was shining brightly, so I had high hopes of finding a good shadow to bring you for this SMASH contest round #433.
As we drove along, I saw countless shadows, but the ones that caught my eye the most were the shadows cast on the asphalt or concrete sidewalks. Basically, we were passing through a part of the city that borders the Guaire River, which is the great river that runs through the city of Caracas from east to west. The whole city was founded around this great river, so it has become a historical symbol for us. But beyond that, there are the corridors of forest that grow along its banks; they are large trees that provide shade and are a relief, especially on these hot days.

In other posts I've dedicated to the community, I've talked about this kind of struggle between Caracas's urban development and the natural vegetation that extends from our Ávila mountain to the valley through these rivers and tributaries. It's impossible not to see large urban developments on some corner or avenue, but also lush vegetation. In many cases, the plants encroach on the sidewalks—a declaration of nature's rebellion—but they also offer shade. Proof of this is the sharp, contrasting shadows cast on the asphalt against the completely clear sky we had. As we walked along, we saw what a typical day was like for a Caracas resident, under the relentless sun, walking to work or shopping at the street markets that spring up in these gallery forests along the riverbanks, selling fruits and vegetables. The shade offered by these trees is a welcome relief on such sunny days, and so, rather than a struggle between urban development and nature, it seems like a symbiosis between the city and the green spaces of the valley.

At the end of the day, I was able to get everything ready for the students to successfully conduct their experiments, and to my pride, they told me it had been their most enjoyable lab session yet! That completely convinced me that the work had been well done, despite all the difficulties encountered throughout the day. I hope you enjoyed this shadow as much as I enjoyed capturing it, and especially writing this piece, which has helped me clear my head and momentarily distract myself from the tragedy we are experiencing. Un saludo apreciada comunidad de Shadow Hunters! Hoy como todos los sábados ya me he acostumbrado a compartirles alguna sombra que estuve cazando en mi día a día a lo largo de esta semana y la verdad es que no he salido mucho, tuve que salir el martes para evaluar los daños del doble terremoto en Caracas, luego el jueves cuando fui de compras al super mercado por viveres y algunas verduras y esta mañana tuve que salir a buscar una bolsa de alimentos que recibé mi madre por ser jubilada de su trabajo, y hay que retirarla al este de la ciudad. Fuimos entonces temprano a buscarla para no quedarnos toda la mañana haciendo fila para recibir esa bolsa de alimentos, la mañana estaba bastante despejada y con un sol bastante radiante, así que tenía buenas expectativas de conseguir una buena sombra que traeles para este concurso SMASH round #433.
Mientras avanzábamos en el carro vi muchas sombras una cantidad inacabable de ellas, pero la que más me llamó la atención, fue las sombras que se proyectaban en el asfalto o el concreto de las aceras. Básicamente estábamos atravesando una parte de la ciudad que esta bordeando el río Guaire, que es el gran río que atraviesa la ciudad de Caracas de este a oeste, toda la ciudad se fundó al rededor de este gran río por lo que se ha convertido en un símbolo histórico para nosotros, pero más allá de eso son los corredores de bosques que crecen a sus orillas, son grandes árboles que dan sombra y son un alivio sobre todo en estos días tan calurosos.

En otras publicaciones que he dedicado a la comunidad he hablado de esta especie de lucha entre el urbanismo caraqueño y la vegetación natural que se proyecta desde nuestro cerro Ávila al valle a través de estos ríos y afluentes, es inevitable ver en alguna esquina o avenida amplios urbanismos, pero también una frondosa vegetación, en muchos casos rompen las aceras, una declaración de rebeldía de la naturaleza pero también ofrecen sombra y una prueba de ellos son estas sombras proyectadas sobre el asfalto que se ven nítidas y con bastante contraste dado al cielo completamente despejado que teníamos. A medida que avanzábamos veíamos como era el día de un Caraqueño en la ciudad, bajo el sol inclemente, caminando a sus trabajos o de compras en los mercados ambulante que se colocan en estos bosques de galería a las orillas del río a vender frutas y vegetales, la sombra que ofrecen estos árboles son entonces un alivio en estos días tan soleados y por tanto más que una lucha entre el urbanismo y la naturaleza, parece una simbiosis entre la ciudad y los espacios verdes del valle.

Espero que les haya gustado estas sombras que cacé en el centro de Caracas, aún el ambiente sigue siendo melancólico, pero poco a poco las personas están retomando sus actividades. Por ahora las actividades en la Universidad siguen suspendidas así que no estoy seguro de retomar mis actividades la semana que viene, pero si es más probable que tenga que ir a atender mi laboratorio en el instituto de investigación, creo que con suerte y si el día lo permite, puedo conseguir alguna sombra que compartirles. Michisimas gracias por el esfuerzo y la dedicación que ha tenido para lograr cazar estas sombras que en lo personal me han gustado mucho como de igual manera, me ha resultado muy interesante y de mucho interés todo lo que nos ha contado acerca del Río Guaire y esa suerte de cinvivencia y hasta de rebeldía entre la naturaleza y el urbanismo caraqueño.
Mi inmensa solidaridad con usted y con mi entrañable pueblo de Venezuela, con cuya melancolía me identifico y también la vivo.
