Are All School Courses Really Necessary? My Honest Opinion

Hello Everyone,

To be honest, this topic is something I have always thought about especially when I look back on all the subjects we were made to learn from nursery till university some of them yes, I agree, were important. But some others? Hmmm let me just say i am still wondering what their real use is in real life.

Let me take you back a bit.

Back in primary and secondary school, we were made to take subjects like Agriculture, Home Economics, Fine Arts, Literature, and so on then in university, things got even more serious. Courses like "Use of English," "Peace and Conflict," "General Studies," and many others were added on top of our major courses at some point, I felt we were just being overloaded with subjects that didn’t really add much value especially for someone that already knew what they wanted to become in life.

Now don’t get me wrong i am not saying all the courses are useless. Some are truly helpful for example, Mathematics builds your logic, English helps your communication, and even subjects like Civic Education teach you how to be a responsible citizen but why do we have to learn everything?

There was this course in school i won’t mention its name but it was so unnecessary for my field. The lecturer himself didn’t even make the effort to make us see why it was important It just felt like punishment every time I was reading for that course, I’d be thinking, “Is this what will help me feed myself in the future?”

In my opinion, some courses should be merged For instance, why can’t Civic Education and Social Studies be one course they are almost saying the same thing also, instead of teaching Home Economics, Basic Science, and Health Science separately, why not bring them together under one subject called life Skills.

And then there are the outdated parts we are in a digital age courses like coding, digital marketing, financial literacy, entrepreneurship, and how to make money online should be added these are the things young people are using to survive now why are schools not teaching us that?

Also, I believe there should be more practical knowledge than theory we spend so much time reading about things we never get to touch or experience it is trustrating some people graduate without knowing how to apply what they have been learning for years.

Another thing is, everyone is not going to be a doctor, lawyer, or engineer some people are born artists, hair stylists, farmers, fashion designers, and digital creators so why do schools not support these talents more by creating flexible subjects or programs for them sometimes, it even feels like school is trying to put everyone into one box but life doesn’t work that way. That’s why many people graduate and still go back to learn a skill before they can earn money.

In conclusion, while school is important i strongly believe not all the courses are necessary some should be merged some should be removed completely, and new ones should be introduced that reflect the times we are living in. Education should prepare us for real life not just for passing exams.

If I had my way, I’d ask the Ministry of Education to review the curriculum every 3 to 5 years to make sure we are not wasting people’s time with things that won’t help them in the long run.

I feel this too.
Since we've known our path, what's the essence of still loading students with unnecessary courses?

Some courses are not just supposed to be there at all and worst part is these courses don't align with what you want to do in life or even help you in any way whatsoever
