The Traffic Game.
Christmas season is when we usually have the most traffic because everyone would want to go out, have some fun and even meet new friends.
Chibueze, my ex boyfriend had a car and I liked to go out with him because he’s mobile and we don’t have to jump on buses.
To make me happy, he knows how much I love Davido and I’ve always wanted to attend one of his concerts. So, that afternoon, he called and said to me that he had already bought our concert tickets so all I had to do was move down to his place so we can go together.
Even before leaving the house, I could tell what the road may look like. Most people here in Lagos love to go to the island during the Christmas season mostly because that’s where shows, concerts and bigger events are held.
Immediately we ventured into the road, we bumped into a jammed traffic. At first, I was hoping that we wouldn’t spend more than thirty minutes in the traffic and even we do, it’s going to be a moving traffic.
In the first few minutes, I was grooving to the music Chibueze was playing and that was going to energize me before I get to the party.
I just picked up my phone to make a video and I realized that we had already spent over thirty minutes in that congested traffic.
“Babe, do you know that we have spent thirty minutes here already?” I asked Chibueze.
“See you. I was just looking at you when you were vibing to the songs. I just hope we do not sleep here,” he said to me and gnawed the nylon of sausage roll which we bought earlier in the traffic and took a swig from his bottle of Pepsi.
Out of nowhere, a lot of drivers began to press their car horns repeatedly. I could tell that they were frustrated by the traffic.
I know my boyfriend so well. He likes to joke at everything even though things were extremely serious.
He pressed his car horn and made a common sound with it. Who knows? Maybe the driver beside our car is a very playful one as well. All of a sudden, he made that same sound that Chibueze had made with his car horn. We were shocked. That means not everyone in that traffic was frustrated.
“Do you know him before,” I asked Chibueze but I know how Lagosians can be. I know this part of the world is full of funny people and they relate with strangers like they knew them before.
Chibueze shook his head is dissaproval. That means he didn’t know the guy from Adam.
Chibueze made another sound with his car horn. This time, not only the driver beside us repeated the sound. There were many other drivers who caught the vibe. Interesting! We didn’t feel like leaving the tracfic again.
“Maybe Davido’s concert is going to start from here,” another driver from behind rolled down his car window and screamed. I could tell that we were going the same way and so many others backed him up.
That’s how the traffic game started. Chibueze makes a sound and every other person mimics the sound. That was when I discovered that car horns can also be used as back ups. When Chibueze makes the sound, some drivers will make that exact sound while some will back it up. That was a different sound entirely which goes well with Chibueze’s sound.
Suddenly, the cars started moving again. The traffic was moving already. To my surprise, people didn’t drive fast. I thought we all were in a haste to get to the venue but we all drove slowly and continued the car horn game.
From the back, two rich guys who owned a GLA250 Mercedes sped fast across our car. Chibueze, my man who loves to overspeed followed and every other car followed.
That’s how they turned the peaceful music game to a car race.
“Small small!!! I’ll get out of your car,” I screamed. No one dislikes fast driving as much as I do. Luckily, there was no accident in the car race and I’m sure everyone got to their destinations safely.
For the guy behind us in the traffic who screamed about Davido’s concert, he eventually exchanged contacts with Chibueze and we all were together at the concert.
“It’s nice to meet you,” he said to Chibueze and I. We all hugged each other and at the end of the concert, we drove back home together but parted ways at our bus stops.
This was such a fun and vibrant read. I could totally picture the lagos traffic and all the unexpected energy that comes with it. The way you turned what could have been a frustrating situation into a mini street concert was hilarious and heartwarming.
I love how the story flowed from chaos to connection - and how music brought total strangers together.
I love the name you gave it. Mini street concert😅😅😅
I love that😅
I could just imagine how much fun that could have been. Being stuck in Lagos traffic is horrible but being able to play that game to get your mind off it, was very innovative.
Yes ohh
It was very much fun but I don’t think I want to do that again especially the car race part😅😅
Nice to hear that people can still be friends, most of the ones I know get very angry during a heavy traffic!
I’m one of those who are usually angry in a heavy traffic😅😅
Finding something fun to do in Lagos traffic that can be so frustrating was a very creative stuff. I hate Lagos traffic.
Lagos traffic can be very frustrating, but it good that you guys were able to have fun from it.
Most at times we tend to look for funs outside but not realize that we can create it ourselves. I can imagine how enjoyable the car race was for you.
