The AI Threat to Work Is Real, So Is The Response

I’m grateful Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei remains candid about the unintended consequences of commercial artificial intelligence.

He maintains,

"We, as the producers of this technology, have a duty and an obligation to be honest about what is coming,

and he warns,

"I don't think this is on people's radar."

While I don’t agree with his last thought, at least after reading this, Amodei makes sense concerning transparency and the negative externalities.

Who’s being honest? What is coming?

A lot of information surrounds the matter. I maintain that today, the employer holds almost less than no loyalty to the average employee. One affected individual, a former graphic designer, puts the employee’s response to this dilemma perfectly.

My advice to every graphic designer is to learn as many skills as possible. You have to be prepared.

I would extend it to everyone, regardless of profession. In an Information Age, ignorance is akin to sin. In this Automation or “Agentic” Age, the sole responsibility is to improve and learn new skills.

Become so valuable AI could not replace you. In cases where a human decides to use AI over another human, take your skills, experience and network. Go independent.

Decentralize your sources of income until you rely on no single stream. Teach your skills and experience. Advise or consult. Share your perspectives through content.

Become An Asset Before You're Replaced

I’m not sharing this to alarm. This is a callout to raise yourself up as an asset, before technology devalues your role.

People posses an infinite potential for evolution. Technology can't replace individuals. It replaces processes.

Digital cameras replaced film, lowering costs and barriers to entry. Photographers received an opportunity to get ahead of the technology by incorporating it and improving their personal ability.

Don’t wait until management calls a meeting with you. Start on that “crazy” business or passive income idea today. Or these crazy stories could become yours tomorrow.

I may take a look at whether or not this is on people's radar next time. It seems like half of U.S. workers say job insecurity is causing stress. Whether or not the job insecurity relates to AI, I cannot stress enough, only one thing will keep your lights on.
