Why Saving Money Is Hard But Still Important

Yesterday in this community I shared my thoughts about building wealth and how it is not something that happens overnight but by small steps. Today I want to continue with another part of it which is saving money. Because no matter how big our plans are, if we can’t learn how to save, building wealth will always remain a dream.

Money is something we all chase everyday, but if we are honest, saving money is one of the hardest thing to do. In a country like Nigeria where prices go up almost every week, you will even wonder if saving money is possible at all. Yet, saving is still one of the most important habits if we want a better tomorrow.

I remember one time I promised myself I will save part of my salary every month. The first month went well, I was able to put something aside. But by the second month, unexpected problems came. A friend needed urgent help, then my phone spoiled, and later transport money increased. Before I knew it, I was using the money I saved to cover those things. That’s when I realized saving is not just about willpower, it’s about planning and discipline.

Many people think saving means waiting until you have big money before you start. Truth is, if you cannot save from the little, you won’t save from the plenty. It is better to start with small, even if it’s just 500 naira a week. Over time, those small drops will become something meaningful.

Another reason saving is hard is because we Nigerians love enjoyment. Parties, outings, new clothes, new phones, everybody wants to show they are doing well. The problem is that when you live only for today, tomorrow becomes harder. I have seen people who earn well but they are always broke because they don’t keep anything aside.

For me, I started using a simple trick that helped. Anytime I earn money, before I spend anything, I remove a small part and keep it. Even if it’s just 10%. I pretend like that money doesn’t exist. It’s not always easy, sometimes temptation comes, but when I manage to resist, later I feel proud.

Saving also gives peace of mind. Life is full of emergencies, sickness, job loss, unexpected bills. If you have little savings, you don’t panic too much because you know you have something to fall back on. Without savings, every problem looks bigger than it is.

One mistake people also make is saving without goal. If you just save anyhow, you might end up using it carelessly. But if you save with purpose, like I am saving for house rent, or for business, or for emergency, it helps you stay focused.

At the end of the day, I have learned that saving is not easy, especially in this economy. But it is possible if we build the habit step by step. Start small, stay consistent, cut down on unnecessary spending, and remind yourself that your future self will thank you.

Money will always come and go, but the little we keep aside can make a big difference later. And that is one of the foundations of wealth I was talking about yesterday.
