The Shiunji Family Children | Nattosheru Review [ENG/SPA]

Unlike the previous anime series I've brought you in recent weeks, which I didn't fully understand at the time, I have a very clear reason for the anime I'm sharing with you today. The Shiunji Family Children is a perfect example of how, in the huge anime industry, there are works that only serve to satisfy certain fetishes of some Japanese creators. In this case, it's pairing (shipping) siblings with each other. That's right, although I didn't mention it above in the plot summary, what really stands out in this anime from the first episode is how the protagonist begins to receive declarations of love from his own sisters.

Arata Shiunji is not very different from the typical generic protagonists we see in any current romantic comedy anime. But unlike many who end up being completely useless at almost every moment in the story, Arata is very clear about his goal in life at his young age: to maintain peace and harmony in his family, especially among his siblings. And as one of the eldest and the heir to the Shiunji family, it's clear that he has a more responsible view of things. So I have nothing against him, the problem lies with his sisters, who are five, to make matters worse.

A diferencia de los anteriores animes que les he traído en estas últimas semanas que no sabía bien por qué las descarté en su momento, este anime que les traigo hoy tengo clarísima la razón. The Shiunji Family Children es un ejemplo perfecto de que, en la enorme industria del anime, hay obras que únicamente sirven para cumplir con ciertos fetiches de algunos creadores japoneses. En este caso es el de emparejar (shipear) a hermanos entre sí. Así es, si bien no lo mencioné arriba en su trama, lo que de verdad impacta en este anime desde el primer episodio es cómo el protagonista empieza a recibir declaraciones de amor de sus propias hermanas.

Arata Shiunji no es muy diferente a los típicos protagonistas genéricos que vemos en cualquier anime de comedia romántica actual. Pero a diferencia de muchos que llegan a ser unos completos inútiles en casi todo momento de la historia, Arata llega a tener bien en claro su objetivo en la vida a su corta edad: mantener la paz y la armonía en su familia, sobre todo entre sus hermanos. Y al ser uno de los mayores y el heredero de la familia Shiunji, es claro que tenga una visión más responsable de las cosas. Así que con él no tengo nada en contra, el problema está entre sus hermanas, quienes son cinco, para más colmo.

When I mentioned earlier that in the first episode we see a declaration of love between the protagonist and one of his sisters, guess who it was from? Nope, it wasn't from his older sister, Banri, who goes to college and all that. Nor was it from his twin sister, Ouka, although I wasn't surprised when it happened later. Yep, the declaration of love we're talking about comes from the youngest sister in the family, Kotono Shiunji. And you're probably thinking: "Well, after the news that they're not blood siblings, it's normal for this to happen and for one of the girls to declare her love for the protagonist, it's nothing new." Yes, but the problem is that the declaration didn't come after the news, but BEFORE.

Imagine my surprise when I see a girl of only 14 (if I'm not mistaken) confess her love to her older brother (17 or 18, I'm not sure) while they still thought they were BLOOD SIBLINGS. Why does this happen? What's going on in Japan with romances between siblings? What the hell is the creator thinking to start this work this way? No one knows, but what doesn't surprise me is that the creator of this anime is none other than the same person who created Rent-A Girlfriend. Yes, that work that was and continues to be heavily criticized on social media due to its story and the creator's tendency to make the protagonist suffer, among other problems.

Cuando les dije arriba que en el primer episodio vemos una declaración de amor entre el protagonista y una de su hermanas, adivinen de quién fue. Nop, no fue de la hermana mayor, Banri, quien va a la universidad y todo. Tampoco viene de parte de su hermana gemela, Ouka, aunque no me sorprendió cuando sucedió después. Imagínate mi impresión cuando veo que una chica de apenas 14 años (si no me equivoco), se le declara a su hermano mayor (de 17 o 18, no estoy seguro) mientras aún pensaban que son HERMANOS DE SANGRE. ¿Por qué sucede esto? ¿Qué pasa en Japón con los romances entre hermanos? ¿Qué rayos tiene el creador en su mente para empezar esta obra de esta manera? Nadie lo sabe, pero lo que sí no me sorprende es que el creador de este anime es, ni más ni menos, que el mismo que creó Rent-A Girlfriend. Si, esa obra que fue y sigue siendo bastante criticada en redes sociales debido a su historia y a los problemas que tiene el creador con hacer sufrir a su protagonista, entre otros problemas que tiene.

I won't say anything about Rent-A Girlfriend, first because I'm one of the few who still watch the anime even though I know it's rubbish. And second because that's not what we're here for; we're here to talk about The Shiunji Family Children, don't forget. With an anime focused on the personal and love lives of a family as "close-knit" as the Shiunji siblings, it's to be expected that things like what I mentioned above will happen. But that's not the worst of it, no sir. As you'd expect from a work by this obsessive Japanese creator, this adaptation is not free of fanservice.

But when we talk about fanservice, I'm referring to explicit scenes of nudity or girls being sexualized in such a graphic way that it's hard not to confuse it with an Ecchi anime. In the case of The Shiunji Family Children, we see this type of fanservice even at the beginning, with the typical bathroom scene, yes, but taken to a level that is even uncomfortable to watch. Let's remember that although they are not related by blood, they were all raised as siblings from a very young age. In other words, the anime takes advantage of this plot twist at the beginning to make us question whether or not it is right to see a certain character with another together.

No diré nada de Rent-A Girlfriend, primero porque soy uno de los pocos que siguen viendo el anime aún sabiendo que es una porquería. Y segundo porque no estamos aquí para eso, estamos aquí para hablar de The Shiunji Family Children, no lo olviden. Con un anime centrado en la vida personal y amorosa de una familia tan “unida” como lo son los hermanos Shiunji es de esperarse cosas como lo que les conté arriba. Pero lo peor no es esto, no señor. Como es de esperarse de una obra hecha por este creador japonés obsesivo, esta adaptación no está libre de fanservice.

Pero cuando hablamos de fanservice, me refiero a escenas explícitas de desnudos o de chicas siendo sexualizadas de una manera tan gráfica que es difícil no confundirlo con un anime Ecchi. En el caso de The Shiunji Family Children, vemos este tipo de fanservice incluso al principio, con la típica escena del baño, si, pero llevado a un nivel que es hasta incómodo de ver. Recordemos, si bien no son de sangre, todos fueron criados como hermanos desde muy pequeños. O sea, el anime aprovecha ese giro de trama del principio para que nos pongamos a dudar de si es correcto o no ver a tal personaje con otra juntos.

I see this as a rather cheap and absurd resource, to be honest. The worst part is that the anime, throughout its dozen episodes, doesn't stray from the same thing: The protagonist being the oldest and most responsible of all the brothers and sisters, with them dropping hints or declaring their feelings for him at any moment of intimacy together. It's the mecca of clichés and genericity in this industry full of generic RomCom anime and endless clichés. The worst part is that I can't say it also seems to be a low-budget work because that's not the case, unfortunately.

But before I talk about that, I want to make one thing clear about this anime. While it has all of the above, I have to admit that the anime manages to generate tension and drama with one plot twist after another. Of course, between all the fanservice, awkward or embarrassing scenes, and bad or double-entendre jokes, it's common for anyone to stray from the main objective, which is to watch a different kind of love story, something you won't find here in the end. So if you're one of those who, despite the fanservice and clichés, likes to watch RomCom anime because you're a hopeless romantic, then go ahead and watch it if you want.

Yo es que veo esto como un recurso bastante barato y absurdo, la verdad. Lo peor es que el anime a lo largo de su docena de episodios no sale de lo mismo: el protagonista siendo el mayor y el más responsable de todos los hermanos y las hermanas tirándole indirectas o declarando lo que sienten por él en cualquier momento de intimidad juntos. Es la meca del cliché y lo genérico de esta industria repleta de animes RomCom genéricos y repletos de clichés sin parar. Lo peor es que no puedo decir que también parece ser una obra de bajo presupuesto porque no es el caso, lamentablemente.

Pero antes de hablar de esto, quiero dejar clara una cosa con respecto a este anime. Si bien tiene todo eso que les mencioné arriba, tengo que admitir que el anime consigue generar tensión y drama con un giro de trama tras otro. Claro, entre tanto fanservice, escenas incómodas o vergonzosas y chistes malos o de doble sentido; es común que cualquiera se desvíe del objetivo principal que es ver una historia de amor diferente, cosa que al final no encontrarán aquí. Así que si eres de los que, a pesar del fanservice y los chiclés, les gusta ver animes RomCom por ser todo unos noveleros, entonces allá tú si lo quieres ver.

Last but not least, when it comes to the audiovisual aspect, I have to admit that the studio in charge did a pretty good job. Doga Kobo is known for several popular works in this industry, but everyone will definitely recognize their talent and potential with Oshi No Ko, their favorite work, apparently. As for The Shiunji Family Children, they didn't hold back at all when designing the characters, choosing a good palette of bright colors and a pleasant animation style and fluidity. Obviously, they fall short in the latter, but at least they maintain a good level of visual detail.

The art style isn't bad either, a little flat, but nothing to write home about. The landscapes and backgrounds are well done too. While they don't have a very high audiovisual level like other works made by the same studio (such as Oshi No Ko, for example), it must be admitted that when it comes to fanservice, they don't hold back at all. But hey, that was to be expected with an anime like this. The sound effects aren't bad, but they're nothing to write home about either. The soundtrack serves its purpose, creating tension and excitement at key moments, but little else, to be honest. Anyway, here's another RomCom anime for you to choose or discard, it's up to you.

Personally, I give it a 7/10 in terms of the romance and comedy genre.

Por último, pero no menos importante, en lo que respecta a lo audiovisual tengo que admitir que el estudio a cargo no hizo un mal trabajo. Doga Kobo es conocido por varias obras populares en esta industria, pero definitivamente todos reconocerán su talento y potencial con Oshi No Ko, su obra favorita, al parecer. En cuanto a The Shiunji Family Children, no se limitaron en nada al momento de diseñar los personajes, eligieron una buena paleta de colores vivos y un estilo de animación y fluidez agradables. Obviamente, fallan mucho en lo último, pero al menos mantienen un buen nivel de detalles visuales.

El estilo de arte que posee tampoco está mal, un poco plano, pero nada del otro mundo. Los paisajes y fondos están bien hechos también. Si bien no poseen un altísimo nivel audiovisual como otras obras hechas por el mismo estudio (como Oshi No Ko, por ejemplo), hay que admitir que al momento de hacer fanservice no se limitan en lo absoluto. Pero bueno, ya eso era de esperarse con un anime como este. Sus efectos de sonido no están mal, pero tampoco son nada del otro mundo. La banda sonora cumple con su objetivo, genera tensión y emoción en los momentos clave, pero poco más, la verdad. En fin, aquí les dejo otro anime RomCom más para escoger o descartar, ya tú verás.

Personalmente, le doy una calificación de 7/10 en lo que respecta al género de romance y comedia.
