Retro Review - Goku Midnight Eye: A cyberpunk gem [ENG-ESP]

Immersing yourself in the universe of "Goku Midnight Eye" is like traveling back in time to a vision of the future that, although conceived in the turbulent and creative 1980s, still resonates with an incredible blend of cyberpunk noir and supernatural elements. Released in OVA format in 1989, it was a production of the Madhouse studio, under the direction of the visionary Yoshiaki Kawajiri, and undoubtedly offers an impressive cinematic experience.

Adentrarse en el universo de "Goku Midnight Eye" es como viajar en el tiempo a una visión del futuro que, aunque concebida en los turbulentos y creativos años 80, aún resuena con una increíble de mezcla cyberpunk noir y elementos sobrenaturales. Lanzada en formato OVA en 1989, fue una producción del estudio Madhouse, bajo la dirección del visionario Yoshiaki Kawajiri, ofrece sin duda una experiencia cinematográfica impresionante.
The plot introduces us to Goku Furinji (that's right, folks, there's another Goku), a private detective with a peculiar and disturbing ability: a cybernetic left eye that grants him telekinetic powers and the ability to manipulate technology with his mind. This implant, the result of a mysterious accident, isn't an unqualified blessing, as Goku must wear special dark glasses to control his immense power and avoid catastrophic consequences.

The film is full of incredible characters and surreal situations that don't correspond to reality, such as the motorcycle woman. She is an android shaped like a woman with motorcycle handlebars attached and driven by an assassin. She shoots plasma beams from her mouth that can penetrate walls. She is one of the threats Goku faces during his investigations and as he uncovers the plans of those who want to control technology.
La película esta llena de personajes increíbles, situaciones surrealistas que no se corresponden con la realidad, como por ejemplo la mujer motocicleta, se trata de un androide con forma de mujer a la cual le pusieron un manillar de motocicleta y es conducida por un asesino, por su boca lanza rayos de plasma que pueden atravesar las paredes. Es una de las amenazas a las que se enfrenta Goku en medio de las investigaciones y a medida de que va descubriendo los planes de los que quieren controlar la tecnología.
Another of the mysterious characters is the Peacock Woman. El estilo de animación de "Goku Midnight Eye" es un sello característico de la época y del estudio Madhouse. Los diseños de personajes, a cargo del propio maestro de la animación Yoshiaki Kawajiri, son estilizados y expresivos, con mucha influencia del anime de finales de los 80. Los rostros angulosos, los peinados muy llamativos y la vestimenta moderna para la época contribuyen a la estética cyberpunk de la película. La animación en sí es fluida y dinámica, especialmente en las escenas de acción, donde el poder telequinético de Goku se representa de manera visualmente impactante algo que me gustó muchísimo. Los objetos levitan, se retuercen y explotan con una energía que te convence del movimiento , creando momentos de gran intensidad. El uso de efectos visuales, limitado por la tecnología de la época, se integra de manera efectiva para resaltar los elementos sobrenaturales y la naturaleza tecnológica del mundo. Sin embargo, el trabajo realizado aquí ha soportado muy bien el paso del tiempo.
To conclude, "Goku Midnight Eye" is undoubtedly a hidden gem of 80s cyberpunk anime. Its intriguing plot, memorable characters, and distinctive animation style undoubtedly make it a cinematic experience for all ages. It has everything: violence, police cases, gore, and also a lot of technology, which speaks to the dehumanization of the individual in the face of the machine. While it may not be as well-known as other films of the time, this film offers a unique and dark vision of the future, exploring relevant themes about the power of technology and the fight for individual freedom. For lovers of classic anime, cyberpunk, and detective stories with a supernatural touch, "Goku Midnight Eye" is a film that deserves to be discovered and appreciated, so I recommend it with my eyes closed. Honestamente me encantan este tipo de producciones, muy adelantadas a su tiempo y paradójicamente mucho mejores en su animación y diseño de personajes que en nuestros tiempos actuales. A quien se le ocurre dibujar una mujer motocicleta jaja, asombroso.
Algo demasiado loco. Cuando ví esa escena me quedé wtf??? 😲😲 Tiene muchas escenas surrealistas mezcladas con mucha tecnología.. ojalá.puedas verla. Para la próxima traeré otra.

I'm bringing back some great '80s anime that I think are worth rewatching, both for their great animation and the story.
Ahorita estoy en una onda retro con el anime y esta película cae como anillo al dedo. El tema con estas cosas es que son difíciles de encontrar, no se donde la viste pero la voy a buscar a ver que tal. La estética es muy superior, en lo personal me quedo con estos años, además de lo loco y sin sentido que hacían visualmente es muy cool.
La puedes ver en Prime Video, yo la descargué hace tiempo junto con otras joyas e la época, sin duda es una experiencia visual demasiado increíble.
