Too Easy Isn’t Always Better

I can't help but reminisce about old times when I was little. Being the second of four siblings, I was the good girl who never left the house.

When my parents went out and warned us not to leave the house, for my siblings, it would go in one ear and out the other.

They made sure to go out and have proper fun with the other kids of the compound. They'd play football, or sand games, ride bicycles and literally do anything but what our parents told us.

It's no surprise I'm an introvert. The house is a safe space, and I'd rather do everything from inside the house than go out. I bring this up to say that the invention of technology can't necessarily make true extroverts want to stay indoors more.

That's by the way. It is true that technology, in the attempt to make life easier, has also made it too easy. Regarding dating, the entirety of people's lives has somehow been compressed into pictures and a few lines.

There's no way they are set up to be accurate. It's difficult to judge a human being based on their picture, let alone deeming them "worthy enough" to swipe left or right on. It's a little inhumane, even.

Then there's the fact that everything has been made deliverable. You want food without having to leave the comfort of your home? Say no more. We have Chowdeck/Glovo, or any other food delivery, all that's out there.

You don't want to go to the market? We have personal shoppers who'll do that for you. Everything can be outsourced within the blink of an eye. You'd think this is a good development, makes life easier. But it makes it too easy as well.

It's almost like a gateway drug. In this situation, you start because you really need the service and have no other option.

But then the second time, you find that you don't need to use the app, but it was easy the last time, and so you use it. And use and use and use and all of a sudden you're hooked.

Then going outside becomes a chore for you; you don't see the relevance of the outside.

There's a reason people tell others to go outside and touch grass. It could be an insult, but deep down, reconnecting with nature in any way possible is healing and necessary.

Going out and meeting people, laughing at jokes, and gossiping with each other are very important.

You won't know how crucial it is until you lose it. It doesn't help that we come on social media, and the message to stay indoors is further reinforced. A majority of videos are made indoors, people alluding to the fact that the indoors are better.

Staying indoors is great and comfortable, but let's not forget that life happens outside our homes, too.

For single people, our partners are outside our homes, and for job seekers, the job experience and transferable skills are earned outside the home. A church is a building that exists outside the house.

So let's embrace that and strive to go outside and touch grass frequently and consistently.

Technology can make life easier, but then we just need to find a way to counterbalance this with our lives so as not to cause health challenges.
