EN-PT The damned organic chemistry

It has been a long time since I left school, so I confess I have been distant from the learning challenges. Even more so in a completely new world like this, with access to real-time information, and worse, with information processed by artificial intelligence.

As a child, I didn't have problems in regular school. I went through basic school without difficulties. It was only in high school that I had to worry a little. At that time, I was interested in studying chemistry at university. That didn't come to fruition! That's how it went...

During high school, I studied in another city. My hometown had about 20,000 inhabitants. A neighboring city was slightly bigger, with about 60,000 inhabitants, and it had a federal school. The federal schools now are limited to two, unless I am mistaken, one in Rio de Janeiro and another in Minas Gerais. I succeeded in entering the federal school in Paraná, so I had to leave at 6 a.m. by minibus to study in the morning and return home at 1 p.m.

In this routine, I felt the education was a bit stronger; it required more dedication, but still, everything seemed fine. Until I was introduced to the subject that started to change everything: Organic Chemistry.

I can't say where I got lost in this subject. I only know that at some point, I passed, and I couldn’t do anything right. No exercise worked, and I stopped being able to progress with the class on the content. The situation became tense when I took the first exam and got a very low score, close to 1 point out of 10. This made me very worried!

There was a second subject, which was laboratory practice. In this one, I managed to get by, and since the evaluation was basically about writing reports, I could do the practices requested by the teacher and put effort into the report. Unfortunately, the grades were separated, and this didn’t help with the theoretical part.

The result was that I ended up in recovery and needed a high grade to escape this problem. It was then that the teacher introduced the possibility of doing the evaluation in pairs. I quickly teamed up with a friend who was good at it. Unfortunately, he had to do almost everything himself because I could only do the initial steps, and even then, I was insecure. The result was that he secured a high enough grade for me to avoid the final exam.

In the end, I never learned, and to this day, I can't say much about organic chemistry. The experience made me change areas, and I decided to do another degree and completely abandon the idea of chemistry. Currently, I don’t need chemistry for anything special, as I’m working in the administration field, which reminds me of that period and makes me laugh.

I know there are subjects that are very important, and even if they seem difficult to learn, it’s necessary to make an effort to incorporate knowledge that can help in the development of your life. I think I should have tried harder, but I don’t exactly remember what I was doing back then, in terms of how much time I had to study or other things that might have interfered with my learning. The right thing would have been to overcome the obstacles and seek help.

Today, I can only thank my friend, who was certainly aware of my difficulty with the subject and helped me willingly. His attitude was very important and a great sign of our friendship!

Faz um bom tempo que eu sai da escola, então, confesso que tenho estado afastado dos desafios de aprendizagem. Ainda mais em um mundo completamente novo que é este com acesso à informação em tempo real, e pior ainda, com acesso à informação mastigada pela inteligência artificial.

Quando criança, eu não tinha problemas na escola regular. Passei pela escola básica sem dificuldades. Foi apenas no ensino médio que precisei me preocupar um pouco. Naquela época eu tinha interesse em estudar faculdade na área de química. Isso acabou não se concretizando! Foi assim...

Durante o ensino médio eu estudei em outra cidade. Minha cidade natal tinha cerca de 20 mil habitantes. Uma cidade ao lado era levemente maior, com cerca de 60 mil habitantes, além de um colégio federal. Os colégios federais agora se resumem a dois, salvo engano meu, sendo um no Rio de Janeiro e outro e Minas Gerais. Eu tive sucesso em ingressar no colégio federal do Paraná, então precisava me deslocar as 06h da manhã com microônibus para estudar durante a manhã, retornado para casa as 13h.

Nessa rotina eu senti que o ensino era um pouco mais forte, precisava de mais dedicação, mas ainda assim tudo parecia bem. Até que fui apresentado para a disciplina que começou a mudar tudo: Química Orgânica.

Eu não sei dizer onde foi que eu me perdi nessa matéria. Só sei que em algum momento eu passei e não conseguir fazer absolutamente nada. Nenhum exercício dava certo, e eu deixei de conseguir avançar junto com a turma no conteúdo. A situação ficou tensa quando eu prestei a primeira prova e consegui uma nota muito baixa, que foi próximo de 1 ponto entre 10 pontos. Isso me deixou muito preocupado!

Havia uma segunda disciplina que era de prática de laboratório. Nesta eu consegui me virar e como a avaliação era basicamente fazer relatórios, eu conseguia realizar as práticas solicitadas pela professora e caprichava no relatório. Infelizmente as notas eram separadas, e isso nada ajudava com a parte teórica.

O resultado foi que fiquei em recuperação e precisava de uma nota alta para conseguir escapar desse problema. Foi então que a professora apresentou a possibilidade de realizar avaliação em duplas. Eu logo montei dupla com um amigo que tinha facilidade. Infelizmente ele precisou fazer quase tudo sozinho pois eu só conseguia fazer os passos iniciais e ainda assim de forma insegura. O resultado veio que ele me garantiu uma nota suficiente para escapar do exame final.

No fim da história, eu nunca aprendi e até hoje não sei dizer muita coisa na área de química orgânica. A experiência em fez mudar de áreas, e decidi por fazer outra faculdade e abandonar de vez a ideia da química. Atualmente não preciso da química para nada em especial, estou atuando na área de administração, o que me faz lembrar daquele período e dar risadas.

Sei que existem conteúdos que são muito importantes e mesmo que pareçam difíceis de aprender é necessário fazer um esforço para incorporar os conhecimentos que podem ajudar no desenvolvimento da sua vida. Acho que eu deveria ter me esforçado mais, mas não lembro exatamente o que eu estava fazendo naquela época, no sentido de quanto tempo eu tinha para estudar, ou outras coisas que poderiam estar interferindo no meu aprendizado. O certo seria superar os obstáculos e procurar ajuda.

Hoje eu só tenho a agradecer meu amigo que certamente estava consciente da minha dificuldade na matéria e me ajudou de bom grado. A sua atitude foi muito importante e um grande sinal de nossa amizade!
