Macroeconomics: Love and other things you don't see, but feel. 😍💔[Eng-Spn]

Alright, guys, it's time to talk about Macroeconomics. In my previous post, we said that Microeconomics "studies how individuals and businesses make decisions to allocate limited resources, such as money and time." Taking that definition into account, we now turn to the macro level (the big, the immense) and this is where macroeconomics comes in.

image.png

Macroeconomics focuses on "the overall functioning of the economy as an integrated whole, in order to explain the evolution of economic aggregates". In other words, instead of looking at how much a single store sells, macroeconomics sums up the results of all the stores. It's like going to a shopping mall and, instead of entering a cosmetics store, looking at the total sales of all the beauty stores in the country. This allows you to know if the sector is growing, if there are jobs for salespeople, or if prices have risen so much that the aisles are empty. Macroeconomics doesn't look at an individual customer's receipt; it looks at the economy of the entire national shopping mall.

Another aspect of macroeconomics that I found a bit difficult to grasp is that, unlike microeconomics (which deals with something specific and tangible that you can see and touch), macroeconomics is more abstract. It's a bit like love: you don't see it, but you feel it 😍💔 hehe

In macroeconomics, the terms are that intangible. For example, when my research referred to GDP (Gross Domestic Product), I didn't really know what it meant, but I understood that it's something like the "energy" of everything we produce. GDP isn't a credit card you can use at the supermarket; it's something that indicates financial well-being or crisis. If GDP falls, you don't see a shopping mall physically collapse, but you feel the economy suffering, companies stop hiring, and opportunities become scarce. It's the difference between a country that progresses and one that stagnates. GDP is basically an indicator of a country's progress. It took me a while to understand it, but I got it.

image.png

Another term that was difficult for me to grasp, and which is a subject of study in Macroeconomics, is Inflation. That monster that makes money lose value: You don't see a thief physically, but you feel how it silently "steals" the value of your money. Every time my mom gives me the same amount of money, instead of being enough for two chocolates, today it's only enough for one. This inflationary phenomenon is also a subject of study in Macroeconomics.

image.png

There are many more objects of study and applications of macroeconomics, such as the economic policies used as tools by the governments of certain countries to achieve economic growth, the use of the balance of payments, job creation, among others. But let's leave it at that, as they are a bit more complex and require further research.

It has been a pleasure to bring you this post, which I researched in more depth, and I found some things difficult to understand. I hope to continue improving for my next posts. Thanks, everyone. Have a great time, and see you soon.

Excellent, @angeluxx! An easy-to-understand finance post full of examples, as always. The definition of macroeconomics and its abstraction from love was crystal clear to me. Of course, I can see a carton of eggs, buy them, appreciate their microeconomic factors, and understand that every time the price of eggs goes up, there are macroeconomic factors that aren't so visible, but are present: that terrible monster you talk about, inflation. You're spectacular at explaining things. I loved your post, congratulations!

If more people could write like that, we would certainly have more people interested not only in finance, but also in writing about this type of subject.

Hey @angeluxx something so complicated and I understand it perfectly. I understand inflation and why it is a macroeconomic issue; everything is now clear. I have experienced inflation firsthand and I was only in Venezuela for a short time and of course it is, as you say in your post, the consequence of a macro process.

Saludos, sigue así, lo haces excelente

The political context helps to define the focus of virtually any and all texts on economics.

Hello @angeluxx,

That is a very readable, digestible blog, presented in a way that just about anyone can understand.

I like macroeconomics. I like the abstract ideas, the way especially macroeconomic trends relate to events in society. Although I don't feel macroeconomic data has much to do with my ever day spending, actually it does.

For example, as a retiree I have savings in 401ks. Since I'm conservative I have these in CDs. I watch the inflation rate and try to follow what the Fed is going to do when I renew my CDs. That's microeconomics influenced by macroeconomics (I think). The interest rate on the CDs can vary by as much as 3 points. That makes a big difference in yield, and in the amount of money I have.

Any time a writer can make a difficult subject accessible, that writer has succeeded. You did that here :)

I agree with you, @angeluxx, she's brilliant at reflecting something so simple about such a complex topic. That's a gift; I understood it completely.

Wow, thank you so much for your kind words and your interpretation of the post. I suppose the macro and the micro are completely intertwined, so to speak.
Thank you so much for stopping by and commenting. That's very kind of you.

I used to teach. That's how I'd break down the textbook sometimes. Had to make it so the kids would find the material accessible. Just what you did here :)

Good (and accessible) writing can truly work like "magic" with certain types of subjects.

This post is a good example of it.

Excellent explanation, @angeluxx, very precise and clear. Understanding macroeconomics is fundamental to understanding what happens at a general level in a country's economic processes. I'm so glad to read and understand this post; you make it look so easy. Congratulations, girl, you're very bold and intelligent!

When other people realize this, we will have a better world for everyone.

Economically speaking, this would be an excellent gain.

The way you write about this subject is very interesting and didactic, which makes it something easy to understand. Content like this makes more people care about learning about finance in a way that's closer to their reality.
