How Majestic Is Your Name (Psalm 8)

O Lord, our Lord,
how majestic is your name in all the earth!
You have set your glory above the heavens.
Out of the mouth of babies and infants,
you have established strength because of your foes,
to still the enemy and the avenger.

When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers,
the moon and the stars, which you have set in place,
what is man that you are mindful of him,
and the son of man that you care for him?

Yet you have made him a little lower than the heavenly beings
and crowned him with glory and honor.
You have given him dominion over the works of your hands;
you have put all things under his feet,
all sheep and oxen,
and also the beasts of the field,
the birds of the heavens, and the fish of the sea,
whatever passes along the paths of the seas.

O Lord, our Lord,
how majestic is your name in all the earth!

What a powerful Psalm this is! I spent time in it today, praying and thanking God. How wonderful and vast His creation is. It's easy to remember when you're standing on a mountain top or looking out onto the ocean or watching a beautiful sunset; all of this created by the fingerprints of God. Then He makes us. Sometimes it's so easy to feel small in all of it. I wonder if that is how David was feeling when he wrote this Psalm. God, the Creator of Heaven and Earth....chose to think of...us?

When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, what is man that you are mindful of him, and the son of man that you care for him?

Verse 5 is what blew my mind as I was reading it. We may feel small; but God doesn't think of us as small. He entrusted us with His creation. What an honour it is to not only be created and given life but to be given the joy and blessings to be able to care for and tend to Gods creation! We are so limited compared to God. Yet He chose us to be part of and to help carry out His plan.

We see it in Genesis when God gives man authority but the way David writes this has opened my eyes in a way that I never saw before. Praise God.

Yet you have made him a little lower than the heavenly beings and crowned him with glory and honor. You have given him dominion over the works of your hands; you have put all things under his feet, all sheep and oxen, and also the beasts of the field, the birds of the heavens, and the fish of the sea, whatever passes along the paths of the seas.

My commentary also adds this which I found interesting. "David is also amazed at the fact that God would grant such limited beings such an important role. These frail, limited beings are the ones God has chosen to superintend His creations (Genesis 1:28). Paul echoes a similar thought when explaining how God chose fragile human beings to carry the immense power of His gospel (2 Corinthians 4:7)"

The term "superintend" literally means to oversee with authority and take responsibility for directing activities.

So Christian, the next time you're feeling small, remember that if you are found in Christ, you were divinely Chosen to help carry out God's plan. While at times that may seem like an overwhelming task (because it is), be reminded that the same God that created the cosmos and everything in-between is literally overseeing and directing your steps. He chose you.

Lean into that with the kind of faith that can move a mountains and then watch God work.
