Gardening update (En/Fr)

I live in an apartment, but I have plenty of space and, above all, large balconies, so it has good gardening potential.

I also have a loggia, which allowed me to shelter a small olive tree all winter and will also be useful next winter for my lemon, mandarin, and lychee trees.

Towards the end of winter, I sowed various seeds indoors: calendula, wormwood, lemon, mandarin, pear, and lavender, and I started having a serious gnat problem.

I was in a constant battle, destroying hundreds with traps, but there were always just as many.
To make a long story short, I tried everything, even BTI, a biological larvicide, but I lost the war. I had to put everything outside at the beginning of spring, when the weather wasn't very mild yet. My seedlings suffered a lot, and I was delayed in my projects.
Inside, I only kept my avocado tree and my croton, covering the surface of the pots with sand.
The sand, if it stays dry, prevents the fruit flies from laying eggs, but the nymphs still manage to get through the layer to the surface.

I no longer have any fruit flies inside; it's a real relief.

My avocado tree is 8 months old now and seems healthy; here's a picture of it.

On a balcony, my oleanders are constantly attacked by aphids. I tried planting wormwood in one of the pots; it's known to repel them, so we'll see.

I have a lavender seedling in another pot, which should also repel the aphids.

My lemon tree suffered a bit from being put outside too early, but it's now growing well again and has lots of new leaves.

A second lemon tree, a clone grown from a polyembryonic seed, is well on its way to catching up. I just transplanted it into a larger pot, and it has quite dense foliage.

I'm also showing you my lychee grown from a fruit pit I ate at Christmas; including germination time, it's a little less than 5 months old. I'm having a bit of trouble finding a good spot for it; it still seems fragile.

For summer flowers, I prefer purslane, which requires little water and care since I'm often away. It self-seeds readily, as you can see here, and will share the pots with calendulas that have been in bloom for several weeks.

I've sown more purslane seeds for the pots where it didn't self-seed as well, and to add some variety. Crossbreeding sometimes brings pleasant surprises.

In this last photo, you can see pear trees on the right and cloned lemon trees on the left, all grown from seeds of fruit I ate.

You can also see the sticky traps for gnats that I left in place after transplanting all my seedlings to put an end to the pest war.

J'habite en appartement, mais j'ai de l'espace et surtout de grands balcons donc un bon potentiel de jardinage.
J'ai aussi une loggia qui m'a permis de garder à l'abri un petit olivier tout l'hiver et qui me servira aussi l'hiver prochain pour mes citronniers, mandariniers et litchis.

Sur la fin de l'hiver j'ai fait des semis en intérieur de différentes graines, Calendula, Absinthe, Citrons, Mandarines, Poiriers, Lavande et j'ai commencé à avoir des problèmes de moucherons, de gros problèmes.
J'étais en guerre permanente, j'en détruisait des centaines grace à des pièges, mais il y en avait toujours autant.
Pour la faire courte, j'ai tout essayé, même le BTI un larvicide biologique, mais j'ai perdu cette guerre.
J'ai dû tout mettre dehors au début du printemps, alors que la météo n'était encore très clémente, mes semis ont beaucoup souffert et j'ai été retardé dans mes projets.
A l'intérieur j'ai juste gardé mon avocatier et mon Croton en recouvrant la surface des pots avec du sable.
Le sable, si il reste sec, empêche les moucherons de pondre, mais les nymphes parviennent quand même à traverser la couche pour remonter à la surface.

Je n'ai plus de moucheron à l'intérieur, c'est un vrai soulagement.
Mon avocatier a 8 mois maintenant et semble en bonne santé voici sa photo.

Sur un balcon, mes lauriers roses sont perpétuellement attaqués par les pucerons, j'ai tenté de planter de l'absinthe dans un des pots, elle est réputé répulsive, on verra.

J'ai un semi de lavande dans un autre pot qui devrait aussi repousser les pucerons.

Mon citronnier a un peu souffert de la mise à l'extérieur trop tôt mais il a repris une bonne croissance, il a plein de nouvelles feuilles.

Un deuxième citronnier, clone issu d'un pépin poly embryonnaire est bien parti pour le rattraper, je viens de le transplanter dans un plus grand pot, il a un feuillage assez dense.

Je vous montre aussi mon litchi issu d'un noyau de fruit que j'ai mangé à Noël, en comptant le temps de germination il a un peu moins de 5 mois, j'ai un peu de mal à lui trouver une bonne exposition, il semble encore fragile.

Pour les fleurs d'été, je privilégie le Pourpier qui demande peu d'eau et de soins car je m'absente souvent.
Il se re sème tout seul comme vous pouvez le voir ici, il partagera les pots avec des Calendula qui sont en fleurs depuis plusieurs semaines.

J'ai fait un nouveau semis de graines de Pourpier pour les pots où il s'est moins bien re semé et pour apporter de la variété, les croisements apportent parfois de bonnes surprises.

Sur cette dernière photo, vous voyez à droite des poiriers et à gauche des citronniers clones, tous issus de pépins de fruits que j'ai mangés.
On voit aussi les pièges collants à moucherons que j'ai laissés en place après avoir sorti tous mes semis pour mettre fin à la guerre.
