Loh Contest #254: Bringing My Mother's Love to Our Anniversary Table

Hello honorable #ladiesofhive

What an amazing question, you know, when I think about what I would bring to celebrate this special anniversary with all of you wonderful people, my heart immediately goes to the foods that mean the most to me, the ones that tell a story and carry love in every single bite.

If I could bring one special contribution to our anniversary table, I would actually bring a whole Nigerian feast that represents everything I love about sharing meals with family.
I am talking about classic Nigerian small chops for those who want something light and easy to enjoy while mingling and chatting. Think perfectly seasoned meat pies, crispy spring rolls, spicy chicken wings, and those little samosas that disappear as soon as you put them out 😋

But that is just the beginning, because you know I can't do anything halfway 😊

For drinks, I would bring authentic Nigerian palm wine, that sweet, natural drink that brings people together and gets everyone laughing and telling stories. There is something magical about sharing palm wine with people you care about. It's not just a drink, it is an experience that connects us to our roots and to each other.

Oh yea 🤔 I would also love to bring something extra special 🤗 the most incredible Zobo drink I have ever tasted. This isn't just any regular Zobo though. I am talking about the exclusive Zobo prepared by one of our amazing hiver @wewarriors-28 She has completely mastered the art of making this drink, and honestly, it is the best Zobo I have ever had.

This Zobo doesn't just taste amazing and refresh your palate, it actually nourishes your body with health benefits you wouldn't believe.
As a healthcare practitioner, I am always curious about what goes into the things we consume, so I took the time to really understand her recipe and ingredients. What I discovered absolutely amazed me 😲

Every single ingredient she uses is carefully chosen for both flavor and health benefits. We are talking about natural fruits, herbs, and other beneficial ingredients that work together to create something that is not just delicious but actually good for your body.

The ginger helps with digestion and immunity, the cucumber adds hydration and vitamins, the watermelon brings natural sweetness and antioxidants. I could go on and on about how perfectly balanced this drink is.

What I love most about this zobo is that even if you are someone who doesn't really have time to focus on taking care of your health properly, drinking this is like getting a health boost without even trying. It tastes so good that you forget you are actually doing something beneficial for your body at the same time.

And you know what? This perfectly represents the kind of love and care we share in this community. We are always looking out for each others wellbeing, always wanting the best for one another. That is exactly why I would be bringing this exclusive zobo alongside everything else because I want to contribute something that not only tastes incredible but also shows how much I care about everyones health and happiness.

And for the main event? Oh my goodness, I would prepare the most incredible pounded yam with rich, flavorful egusi soup for all the real food lovers in the community.
We are talking about that smooth, perfectly textured pounded yam that takes skill and patience to get just right, paired with egusi soup loaded with health beneficial leafy vegetables, tender meat, and that distinctive ground melon seed base that makes it so special.

The Story Behind These Choices

Now here is where this gets really personal and emotional for me. These aren't just random food choices, these dishes represent my heart and soul.

Every single one of these recipes came directly from my late mother's kitchen and they carry her love, her wisdom and her incredible cooking skills.

I can still see her in our family kitchen, standing over the mortar and pestle, pounding yam with such rhythm and grace that it looked like a beautiful dance. She would let me help sometimes, teaching me the technique. "Not too hard, not too soft, find the rhythm, feel the yam telling you when it's ready."

Those were some of the most precious moments we shared together.

My mother didn't just teach me recipes, she taught me that food is love made visible. When she prepared Egusi soup, she would explain every ingredient, why we add this spice at this moment, how to know when the palm oil is just the right temperature, how to balance the flavors so everything comes together perfectly.

She would say, "Cooking is not just about feeding people's bodies, it's about feeding their souls and showing them they matter."

The small chops were her specialty for celebrations. Whenever we had guests or special occasions, she would spend hours in the kitchen preparing these beautiful bite sized treats. She would make each one with such care and attention to detail.

"When people eat your food," she would tell me, "they are tasting your love and your respect for them."

And the palm wine? That was my father's favorite but my mother knew exactly how to serve it and what foods paired perfectly with it. She understood that drinks aren't just about quenching thirst, they are about creating moments of connection and joy.

Why This Means Everything to Me

Bringing these dishes to our anniversary celebration wouldn't just be about contributing food, it would be about honoring my mother's memory and sharing the traditions she worked so hard to pass down to me. Every time I prepare these dishes, I feel her presence with me in the kitchen. I hear her voice guiding me, reminding me of little techniques and secrets she taught me.

When I am grinding the Egusi seeds, I remember her hands showing mine the right motion. When I am checking if the pounded yam is smooth enough, I use the standards she set. When I am arranging the small chops on the serving tray, I try to make them as beautiful as she always did.

The love and care that goes into preparing these dishes are honestly a testament to two things:

  1. The deep love and appreciation I have for this amazing group we are celebrating and

  2. The endless gratitude I have for my mother who gave me these gifts. She taught me that when you cook for people you care about, you are not just feeding them, you are showing them they are valued, they are loved, and they are worth your very best effort.

More Than Just Food

These dishes represent so much more than just a meal. They represent tradition, family, love, memory, and connection. When people taste my mother's recipes, they are getting a piece of my family's story, a piece of Nigerian culture and a piece of my heart.

I love imagining all of us gathered around the anniversary table, sharing these foods that mean so much to me, creating new memories while honoring old ones. I picture people trying pounded yam for the first time and discovering how amazing it tastes with Egusi soup. I see distinguish ladies laughing over palm wine and enjoying the variety of small chops.

But most of all, I imagine my mother looking down and smiling, knowing that her recipes are still bringing people together, still creating joy and still carrying forward the love she put into teaching them to me.

Food has this incredible power to connect us across time, across cultures, and across differences. When we share a meal, we are sharing part of ourselves. And these dishes? They are some of the most precious parts of who I am.

So yes, if I could bring one special contribution to our anniversary table, it would be this feast of love, memory, and tradition because that is what celebrations are really about, bringing our best, our most meaningful and our most heartfelt offerings to share with people who matter to us.

What about everyone else? What dishes hold special meaning for you? I would love to hear the stories behind your favorite foods and the memories they carry 🤗

All food and palm wine pictures are sourced from Google.

Here is to celebrating not just our anniversary but all the beautiful traditions, memories, and love that each of us brings to this incredible community 🥂
