If I was to start a business today, I will go for two things, a supermarket and an eatery. I know there are many businesses out there, but why did I choose this two? It is because food and daily supplies are things people can’t do without. No matter the season, no matter the economy, people must eat and people must buy basic things for their homes.

Food business does not have season, it runs all year. Even when things are hard, people will still look for something to eat. That is why I feel opening an eatery is a good idea. People are always busy now, many don’t have time to cook at home, so they go out to buy already cooked food. That means a steady flow of customers. It can be simple local meals, snacks, or fast foods, the important thing is to make it clean and tasty because that is what will make people come back.

For the supermarket, it is also something that will always sell. People buy groceries every day. Things like rice, milk, bread, soap, drinks, water, tissue, all these are daily needs. If you run a supermarket well, you will always make sales because these are things people can’t avoid buying. Imagine someone going to the market every day under hot sun, most will prefer to walk into a supermarket where everything they want is in one place.

Another reason why I like this idea is because both businesses can support each other. For example, if I have an eatery, I can also stock the raw items in my supermarket for people that want to cook at home. If someone likes my food, they might also want to buy the same ingredients from my shop. That way, I am making income from both sides.

I know it will not be easy to start because it needs good planning and enough capital. I will also need good workers and a clean environment because when it comes to food, people want the best. But if I have the chance, I will take it seriously and work hard to grow it.

The truth is, these two businesses are essential, and they will never go out of trend. People might stop buying some luxury items when money is tight, but they will never stop buying food and household needs. That is why for me, a supermarket and an eatery is the best choice.

I would love to see more smaller independent grocers in my town. There used to be several but what is left are big Chain Grocers that practically monopolize most of the retail market. There are two remaining small independents that I do as much business with as I can. The cost of living and over regulation stifles competition in Canada.
