CineTV Contest: Othello; My Favorite Black And White Movie.

I miss the good old days when movies were in black and white. I’m quite old and I’ve watched various black and white movies before today that we now have colored picture movies and my experiences with them have been good.
I watched the black and white movie titled Othello written by Williams Shakespeare but produced by Luc Roeg and David Barron. It’s my favorite black and white movie till date because Venice is a place I’d love to visit and seeing actors potray their lifestyle on the screen made it my favorite coupled with the storyline.

Othello Plot

Othello, a moor, who has newly married Desdemona was sent on an errand to the Island of Cyprus for a Turkish invasion.
Othello was accompanied by a lieutenant named Cassio. On getting to Cyprus, Othello found out that the Turkish invasion fleet has been destroyed. It called for celebration and Othello took his people along including Desdemona for the celebration with the people of Cyprus.

Iago, an envious companion and ensign pretends to be faithful to Othello. He envies the good life of Othello and Cassio being a faithful lieutenant to Othello then he plans to destroy it all. Not just that, he as well suspected that Othello had slept with his wife, Emilia.
Iago plans to destroy them all and plants Desdemona’s handkerchief into Cassio’s room so those two will be accused of dating.

Infuriated Othello enters Desdemona’s room, kills her and Emilia rushed into the room right after the deed was done. She exposed Iago’s secret and Othello and Iago got into a fight.

In the end, Iago got stabbed by Othello and he was taken away to be tortured. On the other hand, Othello kills himself and that’s the end of the movie.

What do I love about the movie?

The story itself. As a matter of fact, I didn’t know the actors of the movie but it’s just very real. It was acted exactly like what happens in the real life.
The movie is exactly an example of the things that happens in our world today.

And this is what I say that jealousy is not a new act in this world. It’s been existing for so long and that’s how Iago ruined the beautiful relationship and even costed their lives.

How does the movie influence me?

The film has two major impact on me. The movie influences me in the aspect of my anger. Let’s look at how Iago manipulated Othello. Yes, we can be manipulated but to be sure, it is necessary to make findings. The mistake Othello made was not making findings. He also didn’t give Desdemona the littlest chance to express or explain herself before he turned her neck and got her killed.
I know this is the work of manipulation but it all falls back at controlling our anger.

Secondly, this movie has a way of deepening your thoughts on corruption on power. The military world is completely different from what we think it is. In the military world, the thirst and tussle for power is usually real and that’s why Iago tried his best to get Cassio’s position by lying against Cassio but didn’t know his fight and struggle for power will turn this way.

What scene do I like the most?

I’m a heavy fan of unity and I feel good seeing two people from different parts of the world unite. Othello wasn’t just a moor, he was a black moor but fell in love with a Venetian young woman.
Though, Brabantio, Desdemona’s father wasn’t in support of the marriage but Desdemona eloped with the love of her life.

My favorite scene is their wedding scene. Seeing a black man get married to a white woman is one of the most beautiful things to be scene and that’s just my favorite scene in the movie.

Othello is a 9.5/10 movie. It worths all the hype and if I have the chance again, I will still watch it in the black and white form to be precise.
