Crawl - A Review

Today we’ll be doing “Old but Gold.”

Crawl (2019)
I feel I’m the last person to see this movie because how did I not all this time. Maybe because I’m not really a movie freak and I don’t follow the latest or oldest. When I see the trailer and it’s good, I dive in.

Part of the things that made this one easy to watch was because I watched it with my siblings. If I’m being honest, at first, it made me a bit uncomfortable because I absolutely can not stand being in a restricted space. But before I knew it, I was hooked the whole way through. I found myself shouting at people that were not really there. It was a rollercoaster of emotions, anger, pity, fear, tension but it was absolutely entertaining.

A young lady, Haley, heads to her family house to check on her dad during a massive hurricane. She finds him trapped in a crawl space under the house with giant hungry alligators. The rest of the movie follows their struggle for survival. The alligator was not the only thing they had to worry about. The flood was rising and in a small space like that it wouldn’t take long before it floods over and that just gives the alligators the upper hand.

The movie wastes no time getting you into the thick of things. 20 minutes in, and we’re already in the crawl space.
I really loved how there was no delay, it’s only about 90 minutes long and it doesn’t waste a second. It’s lean, focused and intense. No unnecessary drama or overstretched backstory.

The setting played a huge role in delivering what they wanted. A small dark crawl space filling with water during a storm is already terrifying. And then, a sudden flash of something in the water is enough to put you on the edge of your seat.

I’ve never paid much attention to allegators but after seeing this movie, I had to go study on them a bit. They’re such vile predators and that’s exactly what the movie portrayed them as. The realism makes them scarier.

Something else I enjoyed was the relationship between Haley and her dad. Haley was a really good swimmer and her dad was her first coach. He pushed her too hard and that strained their relationship a bit. But with the situation they found themselves in, I’m sure she was thankful for it. By the end, their bond was stronger and It brings a tought to mind, “everything works together for good.”

It was unapologetically bloody. People getting dragged under and torn apart. Even the rescue, didn’t survive it.

Ofcourse it had some flaws. I mean at some scenes I felt it was impossible for anyone to survive that. Out swimming an alligator? Being injured and still swimming like nothing happened. Maybe it’s Adrenaline?

They were also some characters that were there just to show us how intentional the gators were. The moment you see them you just know, “they’re dead.” It’s a bit predictable. Everyone knows the main characters always survives.

Well, overall I’ll rate it an 7/10. It delivers and plays with your emotions which I think it’s part of what makes a good movie. I’m pretty sure a lot of persons should have seen this one. But if you haven’t, I recommend seeing it with family or friends, so you have someone to grab.
