THE SILENT GAMBLE: MERIT, CHANCE, AND THE HUMAN EXPERIENCE

The funny thing about life is its inherent uncertainty. We struggle every day for survival, not sure of tomorrow; we work ourselves out, struggling, not taking time to relax, and as life will have it, some don't get to enjoy what they labour for.
You find people hustle hard and have little at the end, while some do less and have more than enough to the extent of waste. Some people try as much as they can to plan their life to go on in a certain way, only to find out that life doesn't give you what you deserve; everything happens by chance. Opportunities may come but once in a lifetime. A lot of people have regrets about not taking the opportunity when it came, and if they could turn the hands of time, they would not miss such an opportunity for anything.
I overheard my sister talking with a lady who is in her mid-twenties, in the discussion, the girl was in a relationship where the guy wants them to get married right away, but her plans to get married is when she turns 28 or 30 years of age, she loves this guy and he is all that she wants a man to be, but her timing is not right. I said to myself, what if your timing or plans are not the right plan for you, and you end up missing that bracket? At the same time, I also thought, what if she is right afterwards, and she waits and discovers it was the best decision she made. The uncertainties of life make us question everything. Sometimes, we just make the decisions and just live with the consequences, hoping for the best outcomes that could possibly be.
A man could labour all his life and save up for retirement, but doesn't live long after retirement to enjoy what he had saved up. A couple will date for a long period, get married, and only to lose the partner to death almost immediately. A woman who was pregnant for nine months and lost the baby after birth. A wealthy couple who have enough to cater for as many children as they want to breed, but are not blessed with a child.
We often treat life like a mathematical equation where work plus planning equals success, forgetting that there is an invisible hand that cannot be measured. The uncertainty of the future makes the present moment the only guaranteed asset we possess, and what matters most is how we utilise it now. Ultimately, life is a gamble; we make decisions with limited information, and that should be sufficient. We shouldn’t sit back in the future to regret our past choices because of what we know now.
