My Culture And One I Would Love To Practice.

As we all know, culture can mean various things. Generally, it is the way of life of people who share the same value. But, what if I tell you that we all have our cultures too? The fact that I’m from a particular place doesn’t mean I’ll agree totally to what they do or say.

I’m from Nigeria and from the Yoruba tribe. One main feature of my culture is greeting. Yoruba people so much depend on greeting like our lives depend on it and I’m so used to it. I greet people like I get paid for it. I think I must give a kudos to our elderly ones because they are heavy on greetings and they help us know the importance.

Apart from food, our way of eating baffles me a lot and that’s what makes us African and Yoruba to be precise. Have you ever seen anyone tell you that eating morsels with your bare hands makes it taste better than using a cutlery. That’s not true but it’s just part of the culture not to ever use cutlery for morsels.

There are also so many things attached to practicing the Yoruba culture. I know my culture isn’t perfect but the fact that we recognize the importance of our ancestors. Have you ever heard that when most Yoruba people find themselves in deep problems, they run to their ancestors. I mean the likes of *Ifá, Sango and the likes.

Despite practicing the Yoruba culture, I must confess that there are some other cultures especially here in Nigeria that I would love to practice.
There is a state in Nigeria, called Rivers. A tribe in the state, Kalabari tribe has a particular culture which I would love to practice.

On the wedding day, a bride will never smile until she feels she has been sprayed a lot of money. It makes sense. I have watched various videos on that and I noticed that for real, the bride won’t smile until she has been sprayed so much money.

What a culture! I love and will want to practice such on my wedding day. Maybe on my wedding day, I will be the first Yoruba woman to practice that Kalabari culture.
