# Chapter 18 – The Last Dragon

The northern winds were colder than they had ever felt. The landscape changed as they approached the edge of the known world: jagged mountain peaks, plains whipped by ancestral gusts, and far ahead, through a veil of mist, loomed the massive silhouette of the Arch of Khar-Nareth — a land long lost to time.

According to the oldest legends, this was where the last dragon had been seen, not as a beast, nor a monster — but as a guardian. The keeper of the Total Memory — a unique fragment, not of power, but of truth.

Gabriel, Li-Mei, and Théo advanced cautiously, their footsteps muffled by fresh snow. The seal of judgment still burned on Gabriel’s palm, glowing faintly, guiding them. No words were needed. The fragments were drawing them onward, as if the world itself remembered what they sought.

The first signs came in the form of illusions. Shapes moving in the fog. Voices from forgotten memories. Théo saw his long-dead brother, silently accusing him. Li-Mei saw her master, reaching toward her with a hand made of fire. Gabriel saw nothing at all.

But he heard the voice.

“You still do not understand. You cannot face what is coming until you see what you have become.”

Eventually, they reached the entrance of the valley — a great rift between two black cliffs. Inside, all was silent, frozen in an almost supernatural stillness. Ancient ruins dotted the snow, covered in glyphs from an age before language.

And then, at the heart of the valley, they saw it.

The dragon.

Immense. Asleep. Its serpentine body curled around a crumbling sanctuary. It looked like it was carved from stone, but its breath rose in shimmering clouds of frost. Its scales shimmered with faded gold, black, and silver, and even with its eyes closed, it glowed from within.

Gabriel stepped forward, the fragments humming at his presence. The dragon slowly opened one eye — ancient, vast, filled with a knowledge no mortal could bear alone.

“You carry the fragments. You carry the sins. You carry the hope.”

The voice echoed in their minds without sound. Pure thought.

“Why should I entrust the Total Memory to you, when humankind has betrayed it time and again?”

Gabriel knelt. He didn’t speak right away. He took a long breath, and then, honestly:

“Because we’re the last ones left who still believe it matters. Not for power. But so it never happens again.”

The dragon studied them — Li-Mei’s scars, Théo’s doubts, the fragile but defiant fire in Gabriel’s heart.

“The Total Memory is no gift. It is a burden. A curse.”

“Then we’ll carry it together,” said Li-Mei softly.

Silence followed.

Then, slowly, the dragon rose — colossal and majestic. It unfurled its wings, revealing a sanctuary at its heart, where a pulsing light hovered. At the center floated a fragment unlike any before: not made of crystal, nor metal — but of pure essence.

The Original Memory. The Heart of the World.

Gabriel reached out his hand.

The dragon did not move.

It allowed him.

The fragment entered him, fusing with the others. There was no pain. Only silence — then an explosion of visions. Forgotten kingdoms. Ancient pacts. Truths too old to name.

When he opened his eyes, Gabriel was weeping. Not from sadness. Not from joy.

From clarity.

But behind them, a rumble began. A crackling of unnatural energy. The sky tore open.

The Order of the High Ashes had arrived.

And this time, they had not come to judge.

They had come to kill.

Chapitre 18 – Le Dernier Dragon

« Tu n’as pas encore compris.

The way the landscapes and key moments, such as the encounter with the dragon, are described is simply fascinating.
The tension in the end leaves you wanting more, especially with the arrival of the Order of the High Ashes.
