I think enlightenment and wisdom are the result of a life-long pursuit to eliminate these personal illusions. We create these illusions to shield ourselves from something, whether it is trauma, work we don't want to do, or doubts that keep us safe from something.
To me, it is like the horizon. We never really get there but steps taken along the way are the reward.

Perhaps so and just as you mentioned there can be a number of reasons for it.
To be sure...'like a horizon'...and since we are not perfect....'we never really get there'....perfection/or our idea of the ultimate success....'but steps taken along the way are the reward'...Well said!
