The Useless Gadget I Just Can’t Throw Away
I don’t know about you, but there’s always that one gadget in the house that’s completely useless, yet somehow, you just can’t bring yourself to throw it out. It just sits there, collecting dust, but for some reason, you keep holding on to it like it’s some priceless artifact.
For me, that gadget is my old Itel device—yes, that had the best music player back in the day. If you ever owned one, you already know what I’m talking about. That thing was a legend. The sound quality was insane, the interface was slick, and let’s not forget the satisfying click sound whenever you scrolled through the menu. I remember feeling like the coolest person in the world whenever I pulled it out of my pocket, earphones plugged in, blasting whatever songs I had painstakingly downloaded via Bluetooth.
It’s been sitting in my drawer for a long time now, not because I still use it (the battery is long dead), but because I just can’t part with it. This was the first phone I ever saved up for, and back then in school, phone meant you were the guy. Everyone wanted to borrow it just to listen to music, and I won’t lie—I enjoyed the attention.
I actually stumbled upon it again a few months ago while cleaning my room. For a second, I felt that rush of nostalgia, like I was back in my early school days, scrolling through my playlist and carefully arranging my songs so my favorite ones played first. Funny enough, I even found the charger, tried plugging it in, and guess what? Nothing. Dead as a rock. But did I throw it away? Nope. It’s still sitting right there in my drawer, gathering dust like an ancient relic.
And it’s not just me. My GrandFather still has this big, boxy Panasonic radio from the early 2000s. You know the type—those heavy-duty ones with the giant speakers and the retractable antenna. The kind that could survive anything, even being dropped from the top of a shelf. The speakers don’t even work properly anymore; they make that weird buzzing sound whenever you turn the volume up. But he refuses to get rid of it because, according to him, “They don’t make things like this anymore.” Which, to be fair, might actually be true.
That’s the thing with old gadgets—they’re not just devices; they’re memories. Every time I see my old phone, I remember late-night chats, swapping MP3s with friends, and feeling like the coolest kid around just because I had that phone. I remember the first time I transferred a song via Bluetooth and thought, Wow, technology is amazing! Now, Bluetooth file sharing is almost nonexistent, and streaming is the new thing.
It’s crazy how fast technology moves. One minute, you’re flexing your new gadget, and the next, it’s outdated, replaced by something thinner, faster, and better. But even though I have no use for my old phone, I just can’t bring myself to toss it in the trash. It’s like throwing away a piece of my past, and I’m not quite ready for that.
So yeah, it’s useless. But throw it out? Not happening.
What about you? Got any old gadgets you just can’t let go of?
