An Australian Added To The Stack

1966 Australian 50cent (1).jpg

Good afternoon to you all, I hope you are all well.

Today, I bring to you a new coin that I've not shown you before, the reason being is that I forgot I had even bought it šŸ˜… I found it this morning on my mantlepiece after having a tidy up 😁
Who says tidying can't be rewarding eh?

Today's coin is a 1966 Australian 50 Cents piece, in beautiful condition and with a good ol amount of silver inside.

The obverse of the coin: Queen Elizabeth II with Tiara
The reverse of the coin: The Australian coat of arms with the denomination below.
Year: 1966
Value: 50 cents
Currency: Australian Dollar
Silver: .800
Weight: 13.28 grams
Diameter: 31.5mm
Thickness: 2.5mm

I picked up this big piece a couple of weeks back when I went shopping with my son, who has started his own collection of coins now, but that is for a later post!

I paid £4.80 as the seller is having a clear out and moving on a lot of his wares, so I thought this wasn't a bad price, considering it was labelled up at £6.00.

A tidy 10.62 grams of silver in this guy, which really surprised me, considering it's a fairly newish coin date-wise when I compare it to other countries' coins around the world.
At today's silver price, this works out at about £8.00 of silver at spot value 😱

I know, I know, 'It's a fake' you are screaming at your screen. Well, I don't own a fancy silver probe for confirming the correct amount, but this coin matches every aspect on Numista, from the weight and sizes. It has passed the magnet slide very nicely as well, when I have compared it with other similar-sized coins

Either this is a damn good fake, with everything spot on, or the seller had a realllyyyyy bad day at work šŸ˜…
I've now bought over 10 coins from him, all have passed, so I'm more inclined to go with the bad day part on his behalf.

It's a beauty of a coin that I had no idea even existed. A great find and I'll be going back soon to hopefully find some more goodies!

Looks legit to me. The round 50c was the last coin made in Australia to actually contain silver. Not many were made. I actually carry one around with my in my wallet as a pocket piece and conversation starter.

"Did you know this 50 cents actually has silver in it?"
"Did you know they stopped minting it because the silver became worth more than the fiat value of the coin?"

Ok that is pretty damn cool!
I'm really happy with it considering it was a random find 😁
