A walk through Santa Ifigenia cementery

Yes, Santiago de Cuba is home to the cemetery that houses the most heroes in Cuba and that is perhaps why it is declared a national monument.

But today I'm not going to talk to you about their history or show you the niches and vaults of these heroes. This post is about art made for anonymous, a reflection on time and exploring the ruins of a place that shouldn't be in ruins.

Some statues are in good condition, especially those that are almost at the entrance. They still stand the test of time but have lost their luster due to lack of maintenance.

Walking I came across this bird of prey (here we call it "Aura"). As if all the marble did not change at all, that the territory of death is its habitat.

The one below was the work that I liked the most. I don't know if it was intentional or a work of chance that the bush surrounded the statue as if giving an aura of life to a lifeless object

I have to point out that these sculptures that we would indisputably classify as works of art predate 1959. Then creativity and art were replaced by uniformity and the crude Soviet/communist style.

Permanence is something that many aspire to, but the truth is that we will all be forgotten. It doesn't matter how big the monument or how simple the tombstone. 100 years after our death there will be no one who has known us and possibly there is no one who remembers us.

How much love, money and effort the relatives and loved ones must have put into these tombstones or reminders that are now piled on top of each other.

The following image is an example of the decadence, out of necessity, opportunism or bribery, what should have been the rest of a family became that of many.

What matters is when we are alive and today's walk and this post is a reminder of it.

Felicitaciones.
