The Nigerian Educational System: Underpaid Workers and My Mum’s Pain
Gemini AI
My brother used to say that his teacher taught more than one subject. He was their Physics teacher, Mathematics teacher, and Further Mathematics teacher. The funny thing about this is that he could get the same salary just by blogging on Ecency.
Recently, I saw him, and he was thin. Great teachers are intelligent, but I understand that some of these teachers do extra lessons to earn more money. My mom says schools claim the minimum wage is 70,000 naira, yet these people collect only 38,000 naira — just half of that amount.
Now, I am resuming into JSS2 in the next three weeks, but I see how stressful the teaching job is. Look at the teaching job in my area — we have mostly females doing this work. Why? 😲🧐 It’s because males are looking for better jobs to feed their families, not just small tokens. But when we have little to no jobs, what can they do? Nothing. They can only try their best. But when a hungry teacher teaches, what do you expect? Not their full input.
No local institution is ready to send their teachers to further their education. Most of these teachers save up to sponsor themselves.
Education in Nigeria is messed up. I see other countries where they have electric boards and all. Can we use electric boards when we don’t even have a constant power supply? Of course not.
Now, my mummy uses most of her salary to send me to a private school because she wants the best for me. As a girl, I have other siblings, but what can she do? Last month, we barely ate. She even borrowed her pupil’s money for feeding and had to pay it back.
The government is creating hardship for us in Nigeria, and a 13-year-old girl can see it all.
Sapa is what I experienced when the bursary dept. told to stay outside because of unpaid school fees. In fact, I would be happy if someone could pay for either my books or my school fees. I don’t mind giving my mum’s number so you can help because she is really going through a lot as a teacher.
Also, my mum goes to school on an empty stomach just so we can eat. Sometimes, she eats only once a day. Only God knows that the Nigerian system is totally broken.
Nigerian government, Nigerian president — the whole nation is suffering. You don’t pay your workers well. Food is costly. The learning environment is not conducive. We don’t have electricity. We don’t have happy teachers. Everything you are doing is affecting the new generation.
With Hive, my voice is heard. I have said my own. @Ecency is the platform I used. Thank you.
