You can read the first part of the story The Death of Writer in my previous post

So let's start part 2 of the story today....

(Bengali Version):

Part- 02:

Upon entering his chambers, Imrul Chowdhury asked Mobarak Ali to serve two cups of tea. Although Badrul was not in the habit of drinking tea, he finished his cup anyway due to Imrul Chowdhury's insistence.

Mr. Badrul, you may begin now. Please read the story a bit quickly."
Yes, sir, I am reading it. Please listen carefully.

There was an upright and righteous judge named Mirza Motin Chowdhury. He had never compromised with injustice in his life, nor had he ever succumbed to any unethical temptations. While upholding honesty and integrity to unearth the absolute truth of an event, he was steadfastly resolved to establish justice in the court of law. Sitting on the bench, whenever he wrote the verdict for any case, he would remember the sole Sustainer of the universe, who is the Sovereign of the Day of Judgment. Especially at the moment of delivering verdicts on sensitive cases like murder, he repeatedly remembered the Supreme Arbiter of the entire universe—the ultimate Master of life and punishment—before whose tribunal he too would have to stand one day. Even though he knew that walking the path to establishing justice unhindered was immensely difficult, he never gave up hope. Throughout his long career, he weathered many ups and downs. He had even received death threats several times through anonymous letters, yet he remained deeply committed to the establishment of justice.

Judge Motin Chowdhury had resolved countless cases in his lifetime. Sitting on the judicial bench, he had handed down verdicts of either punishment or complete acquittal for the accused. At times, he had to award sentences of varying terms, rigorous life imprisonment, or death by hanging. In conducting judicial proceedings, he had seen numerous defendants and witnesses in the dock, listened to their depositions, and meticulously analyzed the hair-splitting arguments of the lawyers from both the prosecution and the defense. The judge's repository of experience was remarkably rich. Today was his last working day. He brought his professional career to a close by delivering the verdict on a murder case. Under Section 302, he sentenced the accused, Mokbul, to death by hanging. However, while writing the verdict, his pen seemed reluctant to move, as if someone from within was repeatedly holding him back. The way the accused wailed aloud upon hearing the sentence stirred a storm in the judge's heart. He kept questioning himself: was this simple-minded, emotional man truly involved in the murder? Yet, based on the shrewd arguments of the prosecution lawyer, the admissible evidence presented against the accused, the seized exhibits, and the specific time-and-place-bound data, it seemed as clear as daylight that the accused Mokbul had indeed killed Jamal. Awarding the highest punishment to the killer was only appropriate. Due to the defense lawyer's weak professionalism and a lack of proper evidence, the judge had no alternative but to sentence the accused to death. Right after reading the verdict aloud, Motin Chowdhury became deeply perturbed. Stepping down from the bench, he headed straight for his home.

The widower judge had a son and a daughter. His daughter's name was Suzana. She had just passed her Bar exams and enrolled in the legal profession. The son was younger, named Shovon, who was pursuing his Master's degree at a university. Suzana's husband was a university teacher who had been abroad for about two years to pursue a higher degree. Ever since her husband went overseas, Suzana had been staying at her father's house. Apart from a domestic maid to take care of the daily household chores, the faithful Bhulu Gazi was employed for the full-time care of the judge. Returning home, the judge lay down on the bed without changing out of his clothes, as he usually did. After a while, he turned on the tape recorder kept near his head. Closing his eyes, he began to listen with deep concentration to his favorite song, written by Poet Nazrul:

everyone, a couple of days sooner or later. Death will come to you one day, it will come to me, and it will also come to that degenerate butcher, Kamal, one day. That means you are counting the days to your hanging, I am counting mine, and that liar and killer, Kamal the butcher, is counting his too. In reality, we are all waiting to stand on the gallows. Stay well, Judge Sahib.

Suddenly, the judge woke up to a loud noise. Bhulu Gazi used to stay in a small room nearby. Hearing the judge's scream, he woke up too. He called the judge's daughter, Suzana, who was in the other room. Suzana ran to her father's room.

What happened, Father? The judge pressed the left side of his chest and said, What a terrible nightmare I just saw, my child. It feels like the hair on my body is still standing on end. How horrific that long dream was!

My chest hurts too...now. What on earth did I see in my dream!" Saying this, Judge Motin Chowdhury remembered the Almighty a few times. Bhulu Gazi ran and brought a glass of water. Finishing the water in the glass, the judge said to Suzana, "The chest pain is constantly increasing, my child!

Following Suzana's instructions, Bhulu Gazi informed the judge's driver. The judge was quickly taken to a local clinic. Upon hearing the news, Shovon also rushed to the clinic from his university hall in the dead of night. After a check-up, the doctor called Suzana aside and said, "He has suffered a stroke. It is critical to keep him under close observation. Please let him be alone for a while." The judge called Suzana and Shovon and made them sit beside him. He told the doctor, "I want to speak with them in private for a moment. It would be better if you could step away for a bit." Along with Suzana, Shovon was also shedding tears sitting beside his father.

Listen, both of you, life and death are entirely in Allah's hands; no one can tell what will happen and when. Suzana, you must keep a promise to me. Will you keep it, my child?

Wiping away her tears, Suzana asked, What promise, Father?

The judge narrated that terrifying story of his nightmare to them. Pulling Suzana's hand, he said, "If something happens to me, you must appeal to the High Court, challenging Mokbul's death sentence. You will bear the legal expenses for running the case yourself. Innocent Mokbul earns his living by working as a mason. Is he truly involved in Jamal's murder? It certainly does not seem so. There might be some foul play somewhere in this case. I feel that if you fight the case by filing an appeal in the High Court, the real killer will be identified. Mokbul, who has received the death sentence on murder charges, might get acquitted.

In a tear-choked voice, Suzana said, "I promise, Father, I will try my utmost to fulfill this wish of yours. I will fight the case myself by filing an appeal in the High Court. But if something happens to you, how will we survive, Father? The judge drew Suzana and Shovon close to his chest. After a short while, Suzana noticed that her father was no longer speaking. Shovon immediately fetched the doctor. Checking the pulse rate, the doctor said, He is no more.

The two siblings burst into loud wails.

Badrul took a sigh of relief and said to Imrul Chowdhury, The story Fashi (The Hanging) ends here.

How was it? Surely there is a touch of novelty in the story, isn't there, sir?
Imrul Chowdhury replied, "Even though it has a touch of novelty, the story is not fit for publication.

Why, sir?
The readers will feel a sense of dread just by hearing the title of the story. What a horrifying name, oh goodness! Fashi! On top of that, a gruesome homicide with Kamal the butcher's sharp cleaver. No, readers' hearts will skip a beat upon reading such a terrifying story.

Suddenly, Imrul Chowdhury's telephone rang. Someone from the press was calling him. Checking his wristwatch, Imrul Chowdhury exclaimed, "It has become very late. I am sorry, I could not make you happy. You may leave now." Saying this, Imrul Chowdhury walked out.

Deeply disappointed, Badrul Biswas left Imrul Chowdhury's chambers with immense grief in his heart. He made a vow to himself that as long as he lived, he would never go anywhere near writing again. Badrul Biswas bid farewell to his identity as a writer forever.

To be continued......
