English Version (In Search of a Story: The Death of the Author - Part 1)
The Death of the Author

Badrul Biswas is an incredibly shameless sort of person. His modest habit of writing is to blame for this. Alongside teaching at a private high school in his village, this writing habit of his spans many years. He frequently travels to the city with his manuscripts, spending days on end lingering at newspaper offices or publishing houses. His deep-seated desire to see his self-written pieces printed in newspapers or in the form of a book is long-standing.
Badrul has approached Imrul Chowdhury, a newspaper editor and the owner of a publishing house, several times with his self-written stories. But he has never found any traction. Every single time, he returns empty-handed. Yet, his efforts have not ceased. Today, too, Badrul has come to meet Imrul Chowdhury with a self-written story. This is his final attempt. In his mind, he has vowed today that if he fails this time, he will never think about writing again in his life and will sweep those thoughts from his head once and for all.
Seeing Badrul, a look of annoyance instantly crosses Imrul Chowdhury’s face. Even though you've been told repeatedly not to, you’ve come back again? You really are persistent. Tell me, how many times have you come here regarding this?
I have come today for the last time. After this, I have no desire to bother my head with these things anymore, sir.
I am telling you emphatically, the rubbish you write is no longer well-received by modern readers. There has been a shift in the readers' taste. In keeping with the changing times, vast differences have also emerged in their thoughts and perspectives. Readers crave a touch of novelty. Your conventional style of storytelling is quite outdated.
Please consider my case just one more time. Do not let this effort go to waste. I am requesting you today for the absolute last time.
I have read your writings several times before this. They are not worth publishing. Still, why do you keep bothering us repeatedly? Tell me, what is the point of wasting effort if there is no demand from the readers? Besides, our reputation is also tied to this. If we don’t publish something popular among readers, it becomes difficult for us to even maintain our existence. Why don't you understand this simple fact?
Sir, you can look for a touch of novelty in today's writing. The story feels somewhat different to me. If it does not satisfy you this time, I promise I will never bother you again. I swear that I will never even go near writing again in my life. Please think about this last wish of mine a little, sir.
With a look of considerable annoyance on his face, Imrul Chowdhury summons his colleague, Aslam Sheikh.
Aslam?
Yes, sir.
Take him to the next room. I am coming in a little while. Alright, I am looking into the matter, Imrul Chowdhury says, telling Badrul to go with Aslam.
Badrul has been sitting in the next room for a long time. Every now and then, he glances over the story he wrote. His mind grows restless, swaying between hope and despair. Yet, the poor man has no shortage of patience. After about an hour, Imrul Chowdhury arrives. Sitting in the adjacent chair, he strikes up a conversation with Badrul.
What piece have you brought? A poem, or a story?
A story.
The name of the story?
The Noose (Gallows).
Just hearing the name sends a shiver down my spine!"
Sir, if you would reassure me, I could read the story aloud to you.
Time is very limited. I have to go to the press once. Read it quickly, let me listen.
Right at that moment, the office peon, Mobarak Ali, comes in and addresses Imrul Chowdhury—
...said, "Sir, the telephone in your chamber rang several times. The last time I went to answer it, the call disconnected.
Tell Aslam to answer the telephone.
Aslam sir has gone outside for a bit.
Alright, you may go, I am coming.Rising from his chair, Imrul Chowdhury said to Badrul, "Do one thing, let's head over to the chamber instead. We can sit there, have some tea, and listen to the story.
Alright, let's go, sir.
