I Ching : The book of changes | O livro das mutações [EN/PT]

I think this book is not an usual one, most of people believes it is a divination instrument. I read it when I was a teenager and since then I came back to it from time to time. I imagine that it became popular in the western world by this translation from German sinologist and theologist Richard Wilhelm. The Chinese text is believed to exist since 1.000 BC and the first German translation was in 1923 but maybe the hippies counterculture movement in the 60's helped to bust it together with other eastern philosophy and culture.

Acho que este não é um livro comum; a maioria das pessoas acredita que seja um instrumento de adivinhação. Li na adolescência e, desde então, volto de tempos em tempos para reler. Imagino que sua popularidade no Ocidente se deve à tradução feita pelo sinólogo e teólogo alemão Richard Wilhelm. Acredita-se que o texto chinês exista desde 1000 a.C., e a primeira tradução alemã data de 1923, mas talvez o movimento hippie da década de 1960 tenha contribuído para sua popularização, juntamente com outras filosofias e culturas orientais.

The thing most impressed me when I read for the first time was the Carl Jung prologue, the proposer of the collective unconscious concept and once considered the Sigmund Freud sucessor, made his text based in the results from a divination he asked to the book. He commented the Cauldron (Ting - 鼎) while explaining that the answer is ever from the reader and the I Ching images and predictions only makes these self internal thinking more clear. I also have read the biography of Jung (I received a small puppet doll of him from my friend Gisela Rao as a gift, she is a writer and also gave me the book in the photos), as all psychoanalysts, like symbols and beliefs, the dreams are important gates to our minds, coincidence or not I've been sharing some of mine here like the The dream that revealed the 5th dimension to me, Dreaming about Chinese teachers and Old dream with a giant moth.

O que mais me impressionou quando li pela primeira vez foi o prólogo de Carl Jung. O autor do conceito de inconsciente coletivo e que foi considerado o sucessor de Sigmund Freud, baseou seu texto nos resultados de uma consulta ao livro como adivinhação. Ele comentou sobre o Caldeirão (Ting - 鼎) enquanto explicava que a resposta sempre vem do leitor e que as imagens e previsões do I Ching apenas tornam nosso pensamento interno mais claro. Eu também li a biografia de Jung (ganhei um bonequinho fantoche dele de minha amiga escritora Gisela Rao, que tb me deu o livro das fotos). Como todos os psicanalistas, assim como os símbolos e as crenças, ele considera os sonhos como portais importantes para a nossa mente. Coincidência ou não, tenho compartilhado alguns dos meus aqui, como O sonho que me revelou a 5ª dimensão, Sonhando com professores chineses e Um sonho antigo com uma mariposa gigante.

When talking about I Ching I remember the legend that once upon a time, an ancient Chinese emperor give paper, brush and a square ceramic plate (to drop the ink over it) to an important noble and asked him to draw everything that exhisted in the world. He was terrifying with that impossible mission and when left the palace trembling drop the ceramic plate to the floor. But when trying to collect the shards he realized that arranging these 7 different pieces left he could represent all figures of the world.

Ao falar sobre o I Ching, sempre lembro da lenda de que, era uma vez, um antigo imperador chinês entregou papel, pincel e um prato quadrado de cerâmica (para pingar a tinta) a um nobre importante e pediu que desenhasse tudo o que existia no mundo. Ele ficou apavorado com aquela missão impossível e, ao sair do palácio tremendo, deixou cair o prato de cerâmica no chão. Mas, ao tentar recolher os fragmentos, percebeu que, organizando os sete pedaços que sobraram, poderia representar todas as figuras do mundo.

The above story is related to the invention of Tangram but has the same vibe of I Ching reading. Even if the ancient stories and interpretations are interesting, and the images intriguing in its role to wake up our inner answers (maybe all the Chinese literature could be considered a landscape for the brain, like I mentioned in Chinese ideograms are also drawings for me), the oracle and divination role of the book is useful and fun. The authors and commenters since thousands of year ago and the translators more recently ever advice to not to put the book above our heads, it should not become a guide or a dictator and its directions are only for casual consideration and light analysis. Following this recommendation I use a mobile app instead applying the complicated, laborious and seemingly serious formula of using bamboo sticks or metal coins to make the consultations.

O enredo acima se refere à invenção do Tangram, mas tem a mesma essência para entender a leitura do I Ching. Mesmo que as histórias e interpretações antigas sejam interessantes, e as imagens intrigantes em seu papel de despertar nossas respostas internas (talvez toda a literatura chinesa possa ser considerada uma paisagem para o cérebro, como mencionei em [Os ideogramas chineses também são desenhos para mim]), o papel oracular e de adivinhação do livro tb é útil e divertido. Os autores e comentadores, desde milhares de anos atrás, e os tradutores mais recentemente, sempre aconselharam a não colocar o livro acima de nossas cabeças; ele não deve se tornar um guia espiritual ou um ditador, e suas orientações devem servir apenas para consideração casual e análise superficial. Seguindo essa recomendação, utilizo um aplicativo móvel em vez de aplicar a fórmula complicada, trabalhosa e aparentemente séria de usar varetas de bambu ou moedas de metal para fazer as consultas.
