📖 Chapter 4 — The Signal

The run had broken something. Milo, Kaya, and Oz didn’t know exactly what, but sprinting through the coin-rain with no umbrellas had cracked a wall they hadn’t even known was there.

Out of breath and soaked through, they’d taken refuge in an old abandoned laundromat, where rusted machines gaped open like hungry mouths. The rain drummed on the tin roof in a wild, almost comforting rhythm.

Milo stared at his hands. They were covered in golden droplets that didn’t melt away. They clung to his skin like a reminder that every second, they were losing another piece of themselves.

Kaya ripped down a poster from a crumbling wall — the red clown again, this time with a new slogan: “Disconnect or Remember.”

She crumpled the paper and stuffed it into the drum of an old washing machine.

Oz was tinkering with a broken dryer, hoping he could spark it to life for a little warmth.

Then a strange sound crackled through the room — an old loudspeaker wheezing in a corner, wired into the ceiling by cables they hadn’t noticed when they came in.

A distorted voice hissed through the static:
“If you hear this, it means you’ve broken the loop.”

Milo snapped upright, heart hammering.
“Who is that?”

Oz looked at Kaya, who just shrugged.

The voice continued:
“You ran. You chose to flee. Now, the SECRET doesn’t fully own you anymore. But time is short.”

A metallic click echoed, and a rusty panel flipped open near the back wall. An ancient terminal flickered on, its green screen pulsing faintly in the gloom.

On the screen, a simple symbol appeared: a white umbrella. Beneath it, a line of code blinked in and out.

Kaya stepped closer and read it aloud:
— “SIGNAL YOURSELF. FIND THE VIRGIN UMBRELLA.”

Oz shook his head.
“What does that even mean?”

Milo understood before the others did.
“The poet. The madman on the footbridge. He had a white umbrella. He’s the signal.”

Kaya sighed, exhausted.
“So we have to go back out? Into that rain?”

Milo gave her a tired grin.
“Yeah. And run again. Until he sees us. Until we know what he knows.”

Oz let the dead dryer clunk shut.
“Then let’s go. Before we forget why we’re even here.”

Outside, beyond the rattling tin roof, the pounding storm sounded like a key tapping at a door they were finally ready to open.
