# Chapter 17 – The Judgment of Ashes

The ground beneath Aeralis continued to quake. Cracks opened in the walls of the ghostly city, as if the awakening of the fragment had stirred an ancient, painful memory. Gabriel, eyes lost in the void, still held the fragment against his chest. Around him, Li-Mei and Théo regained their senses, covered in dust and soot.

A sound rose from the depths—a low, inhuman growl, both choral and guttural. The dragon statues began to vibrate, then glowed with an inner fire. A new energy filled the air. Aeralis was no longer a ruin. It had become a witness.

“They’re coming,” Théo said grimly.

And they came.

A procession. Members of the Order of High Ashes advanced slowly, flanked by the Witnesses of the Awakening. Their black robes were marked with glowing sigils. Leading them was a woman whose face was hidden behind a mask of silver. When she spoke, her voice seemed to echo from another age.

“Gabriel of Elyanor. As bearer of the fragments, you are summoned before the Tribunal of Ashes. The judgment is sealed. You will stand trial.”

Gabriel hesitated, but Li-Mei placed a hand on his shoulder. Her gaze held neither fear nor anger—only a deep, painful understanding.

“You have to go,” she whispered. “If you refuse, they’ll kill us all.”

He nodded slowly.

They were escorted through the city to a chamber buried beneath Aeralis’ foundations: a perfect circle carved into black stone, lit by a shaft of sourceless light. There, the members of the Tribunal took their places on thrones of obsidian. None had visible faces. They were the Order. The memory. The purifying fire.

Gabriel was placed in the center. The golden chains returned—but this time, they weren’t physical. They bound the mind, the will.

A voiceless tone echoed.

“You stand accused of bearing forbidden memory. Of awakening the fragments. Of breaking the oaths of ancient pacts. How do you plead?”

He raised his eyes.

“I plead… the truth.”

A murmur rippled through the circle. The Witnesses stepped back slightly. The silver-masked woman moved forward.

“Then you accept to see?”

He nodded.

And the visions began.

The chamber became a theatre of projected memories. They saw the first pact between dragons and early humans: an agreement to share knowledge—not to dominate. But the pact was betrayed. Men desired power, and the dragons were hunted. The fragments were created to seal the memory of that war.

Then came the image of Gabriel’s father. The ritual. The blood. The ambition. And Gabriel, still a child, witnessing the forbidden bargain that would shape everything.

Gabriel fell to his knees.

“I never asked for any of this.”

But another vision showed his own choices. The times he could have run. The moments he chose to stay. To wield the power.

“You inherited a chain,” the voice said. “But you chose to wear it. You fed the spark.”

Silence fell. Then the voice concluded:

“The Tribunal does not forgive. But it recognizes clarity.”

A white flame rose above Gabriel. He was judged neither guilty nor innocent. He was marked. A seal appeared on his hand: a broken spiral, the symbol of open memory.

Li-Mei and Théo were freed. The silver-masked woman spoke to them one last time:

“The final fragment is not in a place. It is guarded… by the last dragon.”

The ground trembled once more. And with a roar of ancient echoes, Aeralis collapsed into itself. The judgment was over.

But the journey had only just begun.

Tu as nourri l’étincelle.

Did you hear about the Scooby Doo villain who became an Olympic swimmer?
He would have won, if it weren't for all those medaling kids!

The tension and symbolism are palpable in every line.
Gabriel's judgment, full of painful visions and truths, really opens up new dimensions for history.
The detail of the last fragment guarded by the last dragon promises a fascinating twist in the journey.
I can't wait to see what's next.
