No puedo asegurarlo.
Quizás esa no sea nuestra intención.
No cuesta dinero.
No requiere grandes esfuerzos.

Attitudes Uncovered #28
Being There Without Truly Being There

Some silences are not born from a lack of words, but from a lack of attention.
Hello, community. Today I continue with the series “Attitudes Uncovered,” where I observe and share small fragments of human behavior in everyday situations. The goal is not to judge, but to explore how our gestures, decisions, and reactions reveal attitudes and emotions that often go unnoticed.
A few days ago, I was sitting in a café waiting for my order. As often happens in places like that, I could hear bits of conversations from nearby tables without really paying attention. However, one particular scene caught my interest.
Two friends were sitting at a nearby table.
One of them was speaking enthusiastically. It was obvious he was sharing something meaningful. He used his hands while talking, smiled from time to time, and occasionally looked for a reaction from the person sitting across from him.
The other nodded now and then.
He even replied with a few short comments.
But there was one detail that stood out.
His eyes remained fixed on his phone almost the entire time.
He kept scrolling, checking notifications, and then briefly returning to the conversation as if switching between channels.
The scene made me reflect.
Perhaps he heard every word.
Perhaps he could have repeated the entire story afterward.
I cannot know for sure.
What was obvious, however, was that his attention was divided.
And when our attention is divided, the other person also feels only partially heard.
I think all of us have been on both sides of that table at some point.
We have been the one speaking with excitement, hoping to find a pair of attentive eyes.
And we have also been the one who, almost without noticing, lets a notification interrupt a shared moment.
I do not believe the phone itself is the problem.
It would be unfair to blame an object.
Thanks to it, we stay connected with loved ones, work, learn, and communicate with people who are far away.
The real challenge begins when what is happening on the screen becomes more important than the person sitting in front of us.
That is when we stop being truly present.
We live in an age where communication has never been easier, yet distraction has never been so constant.
Sometimes all it takes is the sound of a notification to pull us away from a conversation.
Those few seconds may seem insignificant, but they can silently send a message we never intended to express:
"Right now, something else matters more than you."
Perhaps that is not our intention.
But it is often how the other person experiences it.
That scene reminded me that listening is much more than remaining silent while someone else speaks.
Listening also means making eye contact.
Paying attention.
Responding with genuine interest rather than habit.
Making the other person feel that, for a few moments, they have your full attention.
Perhaps that is one of the most valuable gifts we can offer today.
It costs nothing.
It requires no special effort.
Only something that seems increasingly rare: being fully present where we are.
Because in the end, sharing a table with someone does not always mean sharing the moment.
And perhaps one of the sincerest ways to show we care is to put the phone away for a while and give the other person something that can never be recovered once it is lost: our attention.
Thank you for reading.
