The Importance of DIY Macaé for Our Local Skate Scene 🛹🔥

DIY Macaé was much more than just a skate spot. It marked a turning point in the evolution of the local scene — a space for skaters to progress, for the youth to recreate, and for street culture to thrive in our city.

O DIY Macaé foi muito mais do que apenas um pico de skate. Ele representou um marco na evolução da cena local, sendo espaço de progresso para os skatistas, de recriação para a juventude e de propagação da cultura de rua em nossa cidade.

Located inside the Complexo, an underprivileged and marginalized area of the city, the spot became a tool for transformation. There, skateboarding was more than a sport — it was a tool for inclusion. Many kids and teenagers who lived around the spot had their first contact with skateboarding there, creating bonds, spending time on something positive, and connecting with art, movement, and resistance.

(PORTUGUES) Localizado dentro do Complexo, uma área carente e marginalizada da cidade, o pico se tornou uma ferramenta de transformação. Ali, o skate foi mais do que esporte — foi ferramenta de inclusão. Muitas crianças e adolescentes que moram ao redor do pico tiveram seu primeiro contato com o skate ali, criando laços, ocupando o tempo com algo positivo, se conectando com a arte, o movimento e a resistência.

Throughout the years, DIY Macaé hosted many local events with great prizes that helped boost the scene. We even welcomed stages of major championships, like the State Skate Championship, which energized the whole city and brought visibility to our local talents.

(PORTUGUES) Durante os anos de existência, o DIY foi palco de diversos eventos locais, com ótimas premiações que incentivavam a cena. Recebemos até etapas de grandes campeonatos, como o Estadual de Skate, que movimentou toda a cidade e trouxe visibilidade para os talentos locais.

Unfortunately, what was once a symbol of collective construction and resistance also suffered from public neglect and vandalism. The lack of support from the city hall, combined with constant destruction, weakened our collective, destroyed our spot, and erased a big part of what we spent years building.

(PORTUGUES) Infelizmente, o que era construção coletiva e resistência também sofreu com o descaso do poder público e com o vandalismo. A falta de apoio da prefeitura somada às constantes depredações enfraqueceram nosso coletivo, destruíram nosso pico e apagaram boa parte do que levamos anos para construir.

Today, with deep sadness, we no longer see the point in trying to rebuild there, since everything we do is likely to be stolen or destroyed again.

(PORTUGUES) Hoje, com muito pesar, não vemos mais sentido em tentar reconstruir ali, pois tudo o que fizermos corre o risco de ser novamente roubado ou destruído.

Still, what DIY Macaé stood for will never be forgotten. We keep resisting in other ways, with new ideas — because skateboarding still lives in us and in the city. 🛹✊🏽
