This is how the Bulgarian Euro coins are going to look like. Bulgaria joining the Euro area in January 2026.

Was sagt ihr dazu?

This is what the Bulgarian euro coins look like. As reported, Bulgaria will introduce the euro in January 2026.

The euro banknotes and the front of the coins look the same in all euro countries, member states have the option of using their own designs only on the back of the coins.

Bulgaria is essentially transferring the design of the leva (stotinki) coins, which are already very similar to the euro coins, to the new Bulgarian euro coins.

The 1 and 2 euro coins feature two clergymen and national saints.

The 2 euro (2 leva) coin depicts the saint and cleric Païssi of Hilandar (Паисий Хилендарски), who is best known for his historical work “Istoriya Slavyanobolgarskaya” on Bulgarian history.

The 1 euro (1 leva) coin also has a religious background. On the reverse side is Saint Ivan Rilski (Иван Рилски), the founder of the Rila Monastery, the largest Bulgarian monastery in the Rila Mountains near Sofia.

All Bulgarian cent coins up to the 1 cent coin (formerly stotinki) have the same design, a depiction of the Madara Rider, an early medieval rock relief, estimated to date back to the 8th century CE, which is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The Bulgarians are very divided on the introduction of the euro. A majority are rather opposed to the introduction and fear a wave of inflation as a result of the euro. Until now, however, the leva has already been pegged to the euro for decades and Bulgaria has had a very disciplined monetary policy with hardly any national debt so far. This could change with the introduction of the euro and lead to additional inflation though.

What do you think?

It's cool that the 1 euro and 2 euro coins have different designs than the rest.

Bulgarians must be very religious in the first place. That's why their coins have something to do with religious people. But they must rely on their disciplined monetary policy to drive their economy rather than religion. I wish them well.

Don't think they are super religious, just church has huge influence nowadays, in communism religion was oppressed, now going the other way.

I think these changes could become tragic if the inflation gets worst

From my collection, 1934 Bulgarian 100 Leva, for those who are nostalgic of old silver coins.

😂 yeah, Bulgaria went through a hyperinflation phase after "democratization", maybe also a reason why democracy is less popular in Eastern European countries.

I think it depends more on how strong the currency is before the euro is adopted. I do like the alternative designs of the coins though.

Too bad they don't do a whole new coin redesign to mark the new age. I can see the people's concerns over adopting the Euro though, but Bulgarian currency hasn't been all that strong on it's own has it? Hopefully, they will fare well with the Euro!
