PayPal adds Pay by Crypto for US merchants. When EU?

Kreditkarten-Zahlungen im Internet zu akzeptieren ist traditionell immer mit hohen Gebühren verbunden, vor allem wenn man einen kleinen Online-Shop betreibt.

PayPal-Gebühren können effektiv etwa 5-6% ausmachen, je nach Währung und wie hoch der Betrag ist. Bei kleineren Beträgen steigt die Gebühr prozentuell, da man bei jeder Überweisung auch eine Fixgebühr zahlen muss. In Extremfällen kann die Gebühr auch über 10% betragen. Pro Transaktion.

Diese Gebühren zahlt normalerweise der Händler, der Kunde merkt davon nichts. Jedenfalls nicht direkt, solange man in der eigenen nationalen Währung bezahlt.

Krypto-Zahlungen sollen diese Zahlungsgebühren drastisch reduzieren. PayPal wirbt in der Promo-Phase mit einer Reduktion um bis zu 90% der Gebühren, in der Promo-Phase nur 1%, danach 1.5%, was verglichen mit traditionellen Zahlungsmethoden im Internet sehr gut ist.

Die Frage ist, ob bei diesen Gebühren bereits die Krypto-Umrechnungsgebühren in Fiat inkludiert sind, oder ob die noch dazukommen, wenn man nicht mit einem Stablecoin bezahlt. Grundsätzlich sollten diese Umrechnungsgebühren aber auch nicht allzu hoch ausfallen.

Einen kleinen Haken gibt es aber noch zum Weg zur Massen-Adaption. Bitcoin-Lightning wird noch nicht unterstützt und im Moment wird "Pay by Crypto" anscheinend nur für Händler in den USA angeboten.

Die EU muss bei technischen Innovationen immer warten und riskiert auch mit zu strikter Regulierung neue FinTech- und KI-Anwendungen unmöglich zu machen.

Denkt ihr, dass der Service mit KYC-überprüften Konten auch in der EU möglich sein wird? Eine restriktive Regulierung könnte Lightning oder Onchain-Zahlungen in der EU verunmöglichen, und damit die Innovation in der EU ausbremsen, was dazu führen wird, dass Händler (und letztendlich Konsumenten) in der EU höhere Gebühren zahlen müssen als ihre Kollegen in den USA, die offener für neue Zahlungsmethoden sind.

PayPal now accepts crypto payments via accounts on popular crypto exchanges (Coinbase, Binance, etc.) or MetaMask. If you have an account on one of the supported exchanges, payments should be very easy and quick to process.

Accepting credit card payments online traditionally involves high fees, especially if you run a small online store.

PayPal fees can effectively amount to around 5-6%, depending on the currency and the amount. For smaller amounts, the fee increases proportionally, as you also have to pay a fixed fee for each transfer. In extreme cases, the fee can exceed 10%. Per transaction.

These fees are usually paid by the merchant, the customer does not notice them. At least not directly, as long as you pay in your own national currency.

Crypto payments are expected to drastically reduce these payment fees. PayPal is advertising a reduction of up to 90% in fees during the promotional phase, only 1% during the promotional phase, and 1.5% thereafter, which is very good compared to traditional payment methods on the internet.

The question is whether these fees already include crypto conversion fees into fiat, or whether they are added on top if you don't pay with a stablecoin. In principle, however, these conversion fees should not be too high either.

However, there is still one small catch on the road to mass adoption. Bitcoin Lightning is not yet supported, and at the moment, “Pay by Crypto” is apparently only offered to merchants in the US.

The EU always has to wait when it comes to technical innovations and also risks making new FinTech and AI applications impossible with overly strict regulation.
