OpenAI "buys" OpenClaw, hires OpenClaw creator, Austrian software developer Peter Steinberger. European AI startup gets successful, is bought by US Big Tech.
OpenAI hat einen Coup gelandet, nicht Anthropic, die zuletzt einen Namenstreit mit OpenClaw wegen "Clawd", das so ähnlich wie Claude klingt, vom Zaun gebrochen haben, aber das beliebteste und stärkste Model hinter OpenClaw betreiben, kauft OpenClaw, sondern OpenAI.
Wobei kaufen so nicht ganz stimmt, OpenAI übernehmen den Gründer von OpenClaw, den österreichischen Softwareentwickler Peter Steinberger und wollen zusammen mit ihm eine Foundation für OpenClaw einrichten. Aber natürlich geht es auch um Einfluss und die Kommerzialisierung von OpenClaw. Gerüchten zufolge hat OpenAI im Hintergrund Steinberger Milliarden für den Deal geboten, der höchst wahrscheinlich über eine reine Anstellung hinausgeht.
Peter Steinberger ist Österreicher, TU Wien-Absolvent und hat vor OpenClaw das Startup pspdfkit (ein PDF Toolkit) co-geründet, das er 2021 erfolgreich um 100 Millionen an eine Investorgruppe verkauft hat.
Persönlich ist das ein großer Erfolg, für die EU aber wieder ein Ausverkauf eines erfolgreichen europäischen AI-Startups an die USA.
Aber wer weiß, was Peter Steinberger noch alles gründet und wie es mit OpenClaw weitergeht.
Durchaus möglich, dass OpenClaw noch öfter geforked wird und sich bei den KI-Agenten noch einiges ändern wird. Denke, der wirklich große Durchbruch wird erst dann erreicht, wenn man OpenClaw mit einer leistungsfähigeren lokalen KI wie DeepSeek V4 betreiben kann und nicht mehr auf Claude Opus oder Codex etc. angewiesen ist.
In der jetzigen Form ist OpenClaw nicht nur ein Security, sondern auch ein Privacy-Desaster, da man man defaultmäßig über WhatsApp (Meta) mit dem KI-Agenten kommuniziert und sämtliche Anfragen, Daten, Personalisierungen, und Files an Claude oder eben jetzt OpenAI GPT 5.2 oder Codex schickt.

OpenAI has pulled off a coup. It's not Anthropic, which recently sparked a name dispute with OpenClaw over "Clawd", which sounds similar to Claude, but operates the most popular and powerful model behind OpenClaw, that is buying OpenClaw, but OpenAI.
Although “buying” isn't quite accurate, as OpenAI is taking on the founder of OpenClaw, Austrian software developer Peter Steinberger, and wants to set up a foundation for OpenClaw together with him. But of course, it's also about influence and the commercialization of OpenClaw. Rumor has it that OpenAI has offered Steinberger billions behind the scenes for the deal, which most likely goes beyond a simple employment contract.
Peter Steinberger is Austrian, a graduate of the Vienna University of Technology (TU Wien), and before OpenClaw, he co-founded the startup pspdfkit (a PDF toolkit), which he successfully sold to an investor group for $100 million in 2021.
Personally, this is a great success, but for the EU it is yet another sell-off of a successful European AI startup to US Big Tech.
But who knows what Peter Steinberger will found next and how OpenClaw will develop.
It is quite possible that OpenClaw will be forked again and that there will be further changes to the AI agent. I think the really big breakthrough will come when OpenClaw, or whatever comes next, can be run with a more powerful local AI such as DeepSeek V4 and no longer relies on Claude Opus or Codex, etc.
In its current form, OpenClaw is not only a security disaster but also a privacy disaster, as you communicate with the AI agent via WhatsApp (Meta) by default and send all queries, data, personalizations, and files to Claude or OpenAI (GPT 5.2 or Codex).

STOPThe fact that people are running autonomous agents with system-level permissions over WhatsApp is a security nightmare waiting to happen. We desperately need that local-first breakthrough.
Leider sind die großen Billionen Firmen in den USA die eben Kohle haben um Firmen mal eben aufzukaufen.
Und bei sowas geht es ja zu 99,9999% dann immer nur darum. Kaum einer wird sagen, nee dahin verkauf ich nicht, für kein Geld der Welt.
Und damit gehen hier solche Firmen leider verloren. Das ist ein großes Problem finde ich.
Wirklich Schade für die EU, es gibt kein strategisches Handeln, außer zu moralisieren. Undenkbar, dass China seine IT Startups in die USA verkaufen würde.
Aber ganz ehrlich, wenn die EU es verbieten würde, dann würden die Leute nur darüber wieder meckern und den Leuten würden ein Dutzend Gründe einfallen worüber genau.
Aber viel schlimmet ist, das (kritische) Infrastruktur an Ausländische Unternehmen verkauft werden.

I think this deal between OpenClaw and OpenAI could introduce new big things in the field of AI agents and perhaps raise the standards among the competitors in the same field
I must retrace my thoughts that this Openclaw is a nothing burger. There's probably something really valuable here for OpenAI to make an acquisition. Looking forward to better forks of this agent
I prefer it if they were separate. I think that consolidating the AI companies might stop competition, and I want the AI technology to be more developed.
