Meta Quest 4 VR headset may be delayed until 2027. New lighter Quest 3 Pro-like device could be released next year though. Update on non-functional web store.

Was sagt ihr dazu?

Meta Quest 4 may be delayed until 2027 — but a lightweight alternative could take its place next year

According to a leak, Meta is postponing the launch of the fourth generation of its Quest VR headsets by one year, from 2026 to 2027. Incidentally, the Quest 3 was released in 2023.

Instead, Meta could launch a new Quest Pro headset based on Quest 3 next year. This would compete with the extremely overpriced Apple Vision Pro, whose successor model appears to have been more or less discontinued by Apple.

It's a shame that VR development seems to be slowing down at the moment. I've discovered a new use case for VR though. VR headsets would be ideal as FPV drone simulators, since FPV drones are also controlled with mixed reality headsets, but not in 3D, as the drone camera only captures the cockpit perspective in 2D.

The problem, however, is that there is currently no professional drone simulation software for the Meta headsets available.

And even the drone apps that do exist cannot be installed because the Meta Quest Web Shop is not working. At least for me.

I can no longer buy apps online. I even opened a support ticket with Meta, but the support chat and email support were not very helpful. I felt like I was chatting with an AI. It asked me for my Meta username and account details, even though I was logged in with my account, etc. It was really tedious. Not very helpful. I tried the checkout process with several browsers and even two credit cards. Support couldn't tell me what the error was.

But there is a workaround: I found out that the store works in the headset, while the online store in the web browser produces a generic error message.

What do you think? Have you tried VR before? Why do you think Meta's VR development is currently rather slowing down?

My son put on VR glasses in the mall several times and played for 30-40 minutes. And after some time he said - it's boring dad :)

No surprise, the world is concentrated on AI, VR has been kinda abandoned

lol typical Meta, always pushing stuff back. Can't say I'm surprised though, Quest 3 is still pretty solid and they probably want to get more out of it before dropping Quest 4. Plus with Apple basically giving up on Vision Pro, who could've seen that coming at $3500 🙄 (sarcasm intended bro) there's not as much pressure to rush out the next gen

VR training would be perfect, you'll get all the muscle memory down before touching real hardware. Shocked this doesn't exist yet because it seems like such an obvious money maker. Someone needs to port one of those existing sims ASAP

Or existing sims could just add support for VR headsets as an output device.

I think Meta is not heavily focusing on VR development

This has been stopped because the way new technology is being developed and it will also be used in this product so that it can remain trending for a long time.

I have never tried it, and I just think that VR isn't there yet. At least, I don't think it can improve much because it's Zuckerberg's hobby. I think he has stopped focusing on it as much after it didn't earn more money.
