Hyperinflation in the 1990s: 10 Billion Nikola Tesla Dinar Banknote (Serbia–Yugoslavia)

Anfang der 1990-er Jahre kam es in Jugoslawien, aber auch in Polen, Bulgarien und Russland nach dem Zusammenbruch der Soviet-Union und des Warschauer Pakts zu einer Hyperinflation.

Besonders dramatisch war die Situation allerdings für den serbischen Dinar, der noch zusätzlich durch den Jugoslawien-Krieg und durch Sanktionen der USA und der EU belastet wurde.

Im Peak der Hyperinflation im Januar 1994 wurden monatliche Inflationsraten von 313 Millionen Prozent gemessen (!) oder 62% pro Tag, was unglaublich ist. Danach kam es zu einer Währungsreform.

Das Fiat-Geld war praktisch nichts mehr wert und musste noch am selben Tag ausgegeben oder getauscht werden.

Am Höhepunkt der Inflation gab es sogar Banknoten mit 500 Milliarden Dinar.

In the early 1990s, hyperinflation struck Yugoslavia, as well as Poland, Bulgaria, and Russia, following the collapse of the Soviet Union and the Warsaw Pact.

The situation was particularly dire for the Serbian dinar, however, which was further burdened by the Yugoslav War and sanctions imposed by the U.S. and the EU.

At the peak of hyperinflation in January 1994, monthly inflation rates of 313 million percent (!)—or 62% per day—were recorded, which is unbelievable. This was followed by a currency reform.

Fiat money was practically worthless and had to be spent or exchanged on the very same day.

At the height of inflation, there were even banknotes worth 500 billion dinars.

Das schon echt heftig gewesen. Und man musste aufpassen mit dem Wechsel Geld, aber an wich war es ja eh am nächsten Tag nichts wert.

Irgendwo habe ich noch die eine oder andere Banknote. Hatte eine mit k.a. 50 ×0en Geschenkt bekommen? Ja ok, es waren als Scherz einige Banknoten zusammengeklebt, ist aber irgendwann auseinander gefallen. !LOL

Yes, I have experienced hyperinflation. Fiat money is not an asset but a debt; it is worth only as much as the debtor's solvency. And in certain cases, that debtor can use it to eliminate their debts, although this also destroys their credibility.

Ich war mal als jugendlicher in Jugoslavien, erinnere mich aber nicht mehr wo und müsste Anfang der 80ern gewesen sein. Wir waren mit einer Gruppe auf einem Zeltplatz mit Vollverpflegung. Wir haben, soweit ich mich erinnern kann, nicht mal Geld tauschen müssen. Gut das wir heute in vielen Ländern Europas den Euro haben und nicht mehr umrechnen müssem.

I haven't experienced it personally yet but I can see it coming.

I have never experienced it, but I think its bound to happen eventually when the economy starts to drop and faith wavers.
