Difficult to watch the FIFA games in a different language in the EU, because all EU states are geo-blocking each other. Welcome to the single European market.
Ich werde gezwungen in Österreich eine Haushaltsabgabe für das öffentliche-rechtliche Fernsehen zu zahlen, obwohl ohnehin etwa die Hälfte der Fußballspiele im werbefinanzierten Free-TV (Servus TV) übertragen werden.
Auch das öffentliche Fernsehen zeigt gefühlt so viel Werbung wie im Free-TV und unterbricht sogar das Spiel mit regelmäßigen Werbepausen, die jetzt euphemistisch Trink-Pausen genannt werden.
Aber was mich am meisten stört ist, dass ich die Spiele nicht mit einem anderen Kommentar zum Beispiel aus Deutschland ansehen kann, da mich der etwas slanghafte, prollig wirkende Kommentar mit der Doppelmoderation im österreichischen Fernsehen bereits nervt.
Das Problem ist aber, dass sich die EU-Staaten gegenseitig geoblockieren und man von Österreich nicht den ARD-Stream und umgekehrt ansehen kann. Willkommen im gemeinsamen EU-Binnenmarkt.
Stellt euch vor, ihr seid gerade auf Reisen in der EU, könnt dann aber nicht die Sprache switchen, weil das wegen restriktiven Lizenzen in der EU verhindert wird.
Selbst Radio-Programme wie das internationale BBC Radio 5 werden für User in der EU wegen den restriktiven FIFA-Lizenzen geogeblockt.
Einziger Ausweg wäre im Moment VPNs zu nutzen, wenn das aber immer mehr User machen, würden die Anbieter das dann auch irgendwann unterbinden.
Was sagt ihr zu den Geoblocks innerhalb der EU? Denke, es sollte in der EU überhaupt keine Geoblocks geben. Das ist einfach zu kleinkariert und schwächt das Gefühl, in einer gemeinsamen Union zu leben.

I’m forced to pay a monthly household tax for public television in Austria, even though about half of the soccer games are broadcast on ad-supported free-to-air TV (Servus TV) anyway.
Public television also seems to show just as many commercials as free-to-air TV and even interrupts the game with regular commercial breaks, which are now euphemistically called “drink breaks.”
But what bothers me the most is that I can’t watch the games with a different commentary, for example, from Germany, because the somewhat slang-heavy, tacky-sounding commentary with the dual-host format on Austrian TV already annoys me.
The problem, however, is that EU countries geo-block each other, so you can’t watch the ARD stream from Austria, and vice versa. Welcome to the EU’s single market.
Imagine you’re traveling within the EU but can’t switch the language because restrictive EU licenses prevent it.
Even radio programs like the international BBC Radio 5 are geo-blocked for users in the EU due to restrictive FIFA licenses.
The only workaround right now would be to use VPNs, but if more and more users start doing that, providers would eventually block that too.
What do you think about geoblocks within the EU? I think there shouldn’t be any geoblocks in the EU at all. It’s just too narrow-minded and undermines the sense of living in a union.
Isn't it more about the rights? You need to pay for every country you want to broadcast to. I mean when it comes to this event in particular.
I know it is about the rights but it feels a bit backward, narrow-minded, as from times before the EU existed. And the worst part, it's not only done to FIFA games but to many other programs too, even in news broadcasts sometimes. I think the EU should not allow geoblocking at all within the EU, totally destroys the sense of living in a union.
Mir geht es ähnlich mit den ORF Kommentatoren und ich bin auf diesem Sender generell auch wirklich nur mehr wenn es gar nicht anders geht.
Derzeit verwende ich auch VPN und das funktioniert auch sehr gut, wenn es einmal nicht mehr funktioniert muss man sich halt wieder eine andere Lösung suchen, aber darüber mache ich mir dann Gedanken wenn es soweit ist.
Gut, dass VPNs bei den Fußballspielen noch funktionieren :)

Sehr nervig , war in Griechenland und wollte streamen, aber ORF ARD ZDF gingen nicht wegen geoblocking. Griechisches Fernsehen ging aber eben in griechisch.
It's bullshit and goes against the very ethos of the globalist EU, but then, we tolerate it, so. We've been watching the games here in English, if it helps. It works in Prague and worked in Italy for my mum. I know it's not the same as watching in your own language (nothing beats Romanian commentators for me), but better than nothing, and better than watching in a language that you don't understand.
Thx for the link, have to try it for the next game. In my opinion the whole geoblocking within the EU is bullshit, even happens on public state tv's own productions and in news coverage sometimes. As if you were only allowed to watch the news from your own national tv perspective.

I don't like it at all, and I don't being forced to pay for something that I don't watch much either. It just sounds like they are propping up some failing TV businesses.
Ich habe schon darüber nachgedacht, meinen V-Server in Deutschland als VPN zu nutzen, während ich im Ausland bin, um die Streams zu gucken. Damit würde ich mir ein Abo bei einem VPN-Anbieter sparen und ggf. wäre auch das Blockieren meines eigenen VPN-Servers für die Streaming-Anbieter etwas komplizierter. Aber auch das bringt mich nur von Außen ins Heimnetz. Fremdsprachige Streams blieben damit ja weiterhin außer Reichweite.
Ich denke, ein VPN macht durchaus Sinn. Sollte ich mir mal ein VPN-Abo besorgen, wird es wahrscheinlich auf Mullvad-VPN hinauslaufen.
