Another Crazy Business Concept That Had An Outrageous Queue At Orchard Central - Yo-Chi Frozen Yogurt

Hello all, hope all of you are doing fine. I recently had a mini teambuilding with my team and found another shop that really blew my mind. When we arrived at the starting point of our teambuilding, we saw this shop, Yo-Chi which looked generally busy with customers but did not had a ridiculous queue, so we thought maybe we come back later for some dessert after our activity.

When we were back, we totally regretted our decision to eat dessert later. We saw a scene similar to this (apologies, I did not take a picture of the queue, got this picture off the web)

And this is only one side of the queue, there is another portion to the right side of the shop that joins to this queue. What does this frozen yogurt shop offer that other shops do not offer? Why would people just happily queue here for yogurt? There must be something that appeals to them and make them want a bowl of this yogurt.

After going through the ordering process then I understood what is so unique and appealing about this store.

First you go to the yogurt dispense corner to choose to dispense the yogurt flavour that you desire.

I took a mixture of salted butterscotch, mango and coconut. And off we go to the topping section where there seem to be a limitless selection of topping available. There are so many to choose from, loads of delicious fruits, chocolates, crunchies are all available and you will most likely struggle what to pick because everything is so yummy.

And when it is all done, you bring your personal collection to the cashier and have it weight and you pay based on the weight of your creation. 100g of your creation cost $3.50, so while all the toppings looks so yummy, taking too many of the heavy ones gonna make your bowl a little pricey. But nevertheless, sometimes it is good to indulge and the fresh fruits are looking really good and you just want to scoop some of it and put it into your bowl.

Tada! The above bowl is my creation at approximately 280g. Taste wise, I am amazed because personally I am not a person that loves yogurt but this made my head turn. The taste was great and together with all the available topping, this is something really nice for dessert.

What's The Concept?

While going through the whole purchase process, it led me to try and understand the business concept of this shop. Yo-Chi key selling point here is self serve and unique creations. Every bowl is specially craft by you, you decide what yogurt flavours to mix, what toppings to add and finally what syrup or dressing to lay on top of your yogurt.

Regardless of what you pick or mix, the final stand-down is just the weight of the creation, one fix price.

And one thing I find that makes the business have large scalability, the staff that they hire need not be technical staff, all they need to do is to either manage queue and collect payment for the yogurt because everything else is self serve. Every other thing regarding the topping etc is just done by the top up crew. So essentially, manpower wise they need not be bounded by skilled labour and in times of shortage, can just hire anyone to cover the manpower crunch. The self service nature truly helped to save cost by a mile. Well done guys!

Unfortunately, they do not accept franchise at this moment, else I might gather a few friends and consider starting up a franchise.

A really amazing find, nice place, nice yogurt and amazing toppings. For the first time, I am thinking of coming back to enjoy another bowl of yogurt which in the past I would never ever think of doing so.
