The Power and Pitfalls Of Social Media

The issue about the impact of social media has always been a debatable topic right from when social media came into existence.

Personally I believe that the people that created the social media had a purpose for it and it was probably aimed at connecting people all round the world thereby making communication and information transmission easier and faster.

But lots of people have turned the space to a place where people get drained rather than being built. Social media has both it good and bad side so whatever outcome you get from it is what you choose to get.

So for me, I have utilized social media in so many ways that I feel grateful for whosoever had this great invention. With the advention of social media I have gotten lots of opportunities that I am not sure I would have received if social media was not in existence.

With social media, I have been able to learn a whole lot of things, people who abuse the social media would not see this aspect. The first business I ever started and I am doing currently I learnt it from YouTube and after learning I tried doing what I learnt and it worked perfectly, since then, the knowledge I got from that space is what I used as my side hustle and I am earning very well from that skill I learnt.

So imagine if the was nothing like social media, I would obviously pay for the training but it was made free for me by just sitting at the comfort of my home to watch, practice and make money from it.

Social media has given me visibility and the ability to connect with people round the world that I would probably never met especially through LinkedIn. LinkedIn is not just a space where you connect with like minded people, it gives you visibility in that through your LinkedIn profile a lot of people get to know you and the skill you have to offer.

The first virtual assistant job I ever got was because of LinkedIn where I communicated with people, share value and boom I got a job offer.

As a student I can’t even mention how useful the social media space has been for us. You can see with me that now, no tertiary education goes on without utilizing the tool of social media. Every single thing that happens, the information, the groups created, online classes and lots more have been easier because of the tool of social media.

I am a great beneficiary of the social media space and I am not disputing the fact that social media does not destroy, it really does but it all depends on the user. The user determines if to be destroyed by social media or to utilize the countless opportunities that it has. You know the one thing about social media nowadays, it drains, yes it does.

Families no longer spend time together as before because everyone has a mobile phone and so we are all busy with the social space forgetting ourselves and the bond a family is supposed to share. So many parents focus and spend more time on their social media neglecting their children and that is not helpful at all.

Though I have countless of opportunities on this space but I have also tasted the other side of it too. There are times I would just tell myself, I need to watch an online lesson and go back to my book but it never happened that way and that’s because after I am done with the lesson I would always see other things that catches my interest and little by little I get consumed in the space and before you say JAH I have spent hours doing so many things.

Gradually, prolong exposure to screen time, chatting, learning online, comedies and all others steal my time and not just that it rubs me off my health too. So in a whole day if I have no where to go, let me just have light and data and I am good, I can remain indoors till night without going out to take some air or just observe the environment and that is very bad.

It is a sedentary lifestyle that could trigger lots of health problems and too much exposure to the screen is bad for the eyes too.

So in all of this, social media is like a two sided coin, it has its own good and bad side and it takes discipline to utilize it properly and to your own advantage, so it is left for every user to choose wisely.
