Some loves are simply impossible / My review of Saishū Heiki Kanojo (Saikano)

Hello, my dear anime lovers. On this special occasion, I want to introduce you to an anime that was quite popular in the 2000s and which we can consider a precursor to "An April Without You," as it's quite sad and heartbreaking. You could say it's an anime version of Romeo and Juliet. That's right, I'm talking about "Saishū Heiki Kanojo" or "Saikano." I hope you enjoy it.

The story centers on two teenagers, Chise and Shuji, who begin a romantic relationship in a town in Hokkaido. They are deeply in love and experience the typical stages of teenage romance, with its insecurities, jealousy, and common dramas. Everything seems normal until one day, a series of explosions and attacks rock the town while Shuji is out shopping. Shockingly, he witnesses planes being shot down, and the person doing it is none other than Chise.

La historia se basa en dos adolescentes que inician una relación amorosa: Chise y Shuji, en el pueblo de Hokkaido. Ambos están profundamente enamorados y experimentan las etapas típicas de un amor adolescente, con sus inseguridades, celos y dramas comunes. Todo parece normal hasta que, un día, una serie de explosiones y ataques sacuden la ciudad mientras Shuji está de compras. Lo sorprendente es que ve unos aviones siendo derribados, y la persona que lo está haciendo no es otra que Chise.

However, it is discovered that the Japanese military, upon authorizing Chise, manipulated her body, transforming her into a biomechanical weapon with wings and high-ranking military weaponry that emerges from her body upon detecting danger. As the war intensifies, Chise begins to wage her own internal battle, as with each passing day she loses her humanity and her machine-like killing instincts take hold, making it increasingly difficult for her to recognize herself. Consequently, her emotional state is profoundly affected by the conflict.

Sin embargo, se descubre que el ejército japonés, al autorizar a Chise, manipuló su cuerpo y la convirtió en un arma biomecánica con alas y armamento militar de alto rango que emerge de su cuerpo al detectar peligro. Shuji decides to stay with his beloved to preserve his humanity and allow his feelings of love to prevail. Unfortunately, this is not possible, as Chise's loss of humanity becomes more evident each day, making their love impossible. Sadly, there is no future for our protagonists; the world has been consumed by an unnamed global war that has led all of humanity to extinction, including powerful individuals like Chise. Thus, the anime culminates in a sad and heartbreaking ending.

Shuji decide permanecer junto a su amada para conservar su lado humano y que sus sentimientos de amor prevalezcan. Desgraciadamente, esto no es posible, ya que la pérdida de humanidad en Chise es cada día más evidente, haciendo que su amor se vuelva imposible. Desgraciadamente, el futuro para nuestros protagonistas no existe; el mundo ha sido consumido por una guerra global sin nombre que ha llevado a toda la humanidad hacia la extinción, incluyendo a personas poderosas como Chise. Así, el anime culmina en un final triste y desgarrador.

This anime is sad and melancholic, unlike other mecha anime, as there is no glory or even a glimmer of hope for these kinds of worlds. It seems unbelievable, but Chise's power is her ticket to death, and for Shuji, it's the constant trauma of watching the person he loves become a weapon without feelings and lose their very identity. I recommend watching this anime because of how different it is from the mecha genre we're used to, where we usually see powerful robots fighting for justice and glory. This anime is the complete opposite: it shows human misery and tragedy in all its aspects and spheres. From the first episode to the last, everything is melancholy and despair. Personally, it made me cry quite a bit, so I recommend it.

Este anime es triste y melancólico, y no se asemeja a otros del género mecha, ya que aquí no hay gloria ni siquiera una pequeña esperanza para este tipo de mundos. Parece increíble, pero el poder que posee Chise es su boleto hacia la muerte, y por parte de Shuji, es el trauma constante de ver a la persona que amas convertirse en un arma sin sentimientos y perder su propia identidad. Recomiendo ver este anime por lo diferente que es en comparación con los géneros de mechas a los que estamos acostumbrados, donde solemos ver robots poderosos que luchan por la justicia y la gloria. Este anime es justamente todo lo contrario: muestra la desdicha y la desgracia humana en todos sus aspectos y ámbitos. Desde el primer capítulo hasta el último, todo es melancolía y desesperación. A mí, en lo personal, me hizo llorar bastante, así que lo recomiendo.
