Let The Wild Be Wild .

Hello Everyone, welcome to another edition of the Hive learners prompt, first and foremost hope you are enjoying the weather wherever you are in the world? Sure you are . Alright ,Let's Dive in then....

So let me just clear this out first ,I have only been to the zoo once in my entire life and that one time was when I was still staying with my aunt in Port Harcourt city , She took me and her kids to visit the zoo, and then I remember we were really excited because it sounded like a very big deal then, You know how as kids, the idea of seeing lions, monkeys, crocodiles and every other kind of animals live and direct is always something exciting ehn?

So we got there and I remember seeing some animals in their cages, monkeys were jumping up and down , the lions were not even interested in us they just looked tired and quiet like they were bored of everything, there were two lions actually ,then there were some crocodiles that did not even move, as if they were fake, but they were not o, I think that was the first time it really hit me that zoo animals don’t exactly look like what we really do see in movies or documentaries, they looked more tired than wild kind of

Now, I am not an expert when it comes to wildlife or animal rights and all, but just based on my small experience and what I have observed, I personally think animals are better off in the wild. Like that is their real home, I mean, imagine taking a lion that is used to chasing antelopes and roaming free in the forest, then locking it in a cage just so people can come and stare at it every Saturday, that doesn’t sound fair to me o

So some people argued that zoos helps to protect endangered animals and give people a chance to learn about them up close, so yeah I get that, and maybe there is a point in that, but at the same time, how do you now protect something by removing it from its natural life completely? I still ask this question ,you know especially when the space you are putting them in can not even compare to their real habitat. It is like trying to save a bird by locking it in a small box , it is safe, but is it truly living?

Another thing is that most of the animals in zoos, especially here in Nigeria, don’t even look like they are being properly taken care of, you get?their cages are small, the surroundings look like they have not been cleaned in ages, and the animals just look like they have given up on life. So if we are going to say zoos are for protection or learning, then they should at least be giving these animals a better life than what they do have in the wild, except there is another reason why .

But on the other side, I also understand that in the wild, some of these animals don't live live long. They always get hunted or killed by other animals or even humans sef , so it’s tricky like choosing between safety and freedom.

Still, if I am being honest, I would rather animals live their natural lives and enjoy whatever freedom they can, than be trapped just for our entertainment, I don’t even like seeing animals do tricks or shows in parks like, who asked them if they wanted to perform you get?

So yeah, I am not anti-zoo completely , but I feel like the way most zoos are run especially here is not ideal, if it is really for education and protection, then the animals should be well-fed, well-treated, and given as much space as possible ,otherwise just let them be wild and free, even if it means their lives won’t be as long. I tend to be corrected if i am wrong here.

That is my little two cents on this zoo matter. Like I said, I have only been there once.

Totally feel this. It’s heartbreaking when you see them looking so miserable in those small spaces.
