RE: A Smoke and A Show

You are viewing a single comment's thread:

hi @seki1 this piece is currently under curation. A question regarding your additional link to the copyrighted image: This area of law is contentious and hinges on several variables. It is not clear from the link that you have used whether or not copyright has been infringed or circumvented or whether it could be a legitimate use of linking. We would need more information. On the face of it, the link starts with the word 'encrypted' which might suggest that the image was behind a paywall. This would make the use of the link to this image questionable. Please could you provide more information, including a link to the website where the image appears. As an aside, we would rather not be getting side-tracked with issues like this, and instead be able to focus solely on the quality of your story.

I see.
I'll redo the link so it'll go straight to the site where it was gotten from.
You should note that it is a copyright image, that's why I just provided the link to it.

It's the image that prompted the story so to say so I just wanted to point that out.

hello @seki1 Thank you for your transparency in these discussions and for providing this fresh link to the image which was published by The Times of India. It is not clear whether The Times of India used the image legitimately or not, or whether your link is in itself a legitimate form of reference. There is no accreditation anywhere to the original photographer. The law is very unsettled in this area, and lines can become easily blurred. Furthermore, we do not want to encourage anything in The Ink Well that takes curators away from the core task of reviewing stories. This kind of thing becomes an unnecessary distraction and wastes valuable curation time. We also don't want to be setting precedents by being seen to condone something that in some forms may be a violation of copyright, and in others not, and where the evidence to prove the matter either way can be complex and time-consuming, as we are not here to spend an inordinate amount of time debating the technical legalities and ethics of nuances in copyright law. Respectfully, therefore, kindly remove the link altogether and stick to the community guidelines when it comes to sharing images in posts published in The Ink Well community. Thank you.
