Splinterlands: My Very First Black Foil Card!

When I first started playing Splinterlands back before the days of Chaos, it was always a thrill to pull a gold foil card. For the most part all of the cards were regular foil except for the very small percentage that turned out to be gold. That all changed with Conclave Arcana as they introduced the new black foil cards, and the ultra rare arcane versions of both gold and black foil.
A couple of months ago, I started to play Frontier Mode in the game for the first time. It utilizes only a very limited number of Foundations cards. The first ones are given to you free in Campaign Mode, and then you build your deck by winning Foundations packs in game play. You can also purchase cards to build the deck more quickly. There are some additional benefits you can gain by playing, you can win Jackpot Cards which are four new cards, or black foil cards in a weekly drawing. You receive entries for completing daily rewards.
So far I have come up dry on the weekly draws until this now. My alternate account, that I once set up for a scholar, finally managed to get lucky and get a black foil! The funny thing about the account is that it has always been lucky. My first gold legendary reward card was pulled there, after playing for about two weeks. On my primary account I hadn't pulled one in over a year... I think my primary account just may be cursed...
Anyway, onto the black foil pull:

I was thrilled to finally get lucky out of the weekly drawing, a black foil Port Guardian. At first I didn't realize just how lucky this card was, if you look closely you can see the mint number: 8!

The first twenty minted of each variant are considered special and carry extra value. I won't be selling this one though, it's my first black foil!

So how is this different in gameplay from the standard card once maxed out? Really none, no secret abilities, just the wow factor. You do win extra SPS in Modern Mode when you utilize the black foil cards, so there is at least a bonus there!
And below I shared the Mint History of the Port Guardian black foil cards. You can see my alt account at number eight!

And if you're curious, below I included a screenshot of the area in Frontier Mode under rewards where you can see how many entries you have in the upcoming draw.

It's definitely worth playing to win some entries, if I can win, anyone can. I have lousy luck as a general rule!

That wasn't where my luck ended this past week in Splinterlands. Once again I managed to pull a Jackpot Card on my daily rewards in Frontier Mode. Of course, this didn't happen on my primary account either. As I mentioned, it may be cursed... After winning my first five battles to pull my daily reward entries I had the surprise below:

Then for the reveal:

Talk about incredible luck, a gold foil epic White Chickadee! This is a great card as it is three mana and fills in holes in you life splinter matches, in Frontier you'll find there are no cards smaller than four mana in the main cards. This three really helps as a filler!

And best of all, with one more copy this card will offer tank heal. That is the first time we will have that in Frontier Mode. Right now these cards are running around $20, so too expensive to buy one to level it up. At least for me anyway! I'll keep my eyes open though... It's been a very lucky week in Splinterlands, at least on my secondary account (as always.)

And what would a Splinterlands post be without at least one battle? So I'll share one with the black foil in action. Keep in mind he is the tank so goes down pretty quickly! lol
You can view the whole battle at this link.

To start off we had a match with a mana cap of 55 with some extra rulesets just to make things interesting. There was Hey Jealousy and Blood and Sunder, meaning that the unit on your team with the highest health is attacked first and that the armor is reduced each time an attack successfully hits home. The first ruleset is a newer one and kind of difficult as I find I have to actually think carefully or it's easy to lose your best cards immediately.
For my archon I went with water Marlai Sinagariel which increases the magic attack of all the monsters on my team. For my tank I went with the new toy, the black foil Port Guardian followed by Great Bear Druid. Next in line I put Mystic Scaleweaver followed by A'lan Musketeer. Rounding out the team I used Saltwater Mage and Spitting Camel. The reasoning behind it being that there are four monsters with seven health so the damage will get spread between them. At least that is the theory...
My opponent also used Marlai Sinagriel with Port Guardian as tank. Great Bear Druid came next up followed by Lunaki Howler, and finishing off with Saltwater Mage and Mystic Scaleweaver.

Here we go! At the end of round one both tanks are looking pretty sad. You'll also note my opponent's last two magic monsters aren't faring well as they had the highest health.

Down go the tanks mid way though round two...

By round three it was pretty much over.

Down goes the Saltwater Mage for the count.

And my opponent's last card is defeated. The reason I won was simply having so many monsters with seven health, it spread out the damage whereas my opponent did not.

Opening Six Foundation Packs
I always love to add in some pack openings. These were from the six that I won today in gameplay and they were pretty lucky!

Right off the bat two legendary cards popped up, I was hoping they would flash gold, but no such luck today! I pulled a Mystic Scaleweaver and a Celestial Guardian, not too bad so far. I also pulled a life archon times two as well!

Some more good luck continues in the second batch with an epic Salt Water Mage and the water archon Marlai Singariel. Two very tough cards to pull!

And the last three were nothing too special sadly... But overall a great bunch of pulls from these six packs!

That will wrap up my Splinterlands post for this week. I hope you enjoyed seeing the black foil Port Guardian, I'm still excited. Then the gold foil epic White Chickadee, talk about a lucky streak. I best run out and buy a lottery ticket (not!) I don't play the lotto, you have a better chance of being struck by lightning and then hit by a meteor the same day... I'll take a hard pass on both of those experiences!
Please feel free to leave any comments or questions below, and thanks so much for all of your support. I deeply appreciate it! Have a great weekend everyone!

What! I don't even have any of those! Nice pull!
Thanks! I've been hoping for quite some time now, but it finally came. Like I mentioned though, always on that secondary account. That primary account must have the Splinterlands curse on it! lol
That's so crazy. I should try playing again on one of my other accounts.
damn, it's so awesome bro

I think you had similar strategy with the opponent, the difference I see is that you had more leveled up cards which was a better advantage
Having a maxed out Foundations deck makes a big difference. I really don't much like that ruleset, but they are always adding things in to make it harder!
Bing Bong! We love to see it. I love the look of the new Black Foil cards and the new lottery system is a great way to reward players in different formats!
They are awesome cards aren't they? Now I just need to get an arcane pull as well!
