Splinterlands: Monsters That Revolutionized My Modern Gameplay

Over the last couple of months I started to increase my Splinterlands gameplay once again after taking quite some time off. This was principally due to Frontier Mode as I have found the challenge of having fewer cards available more interesting and intellectually stimulating. Recently I finally managed to max out my entire Foundations deck which felt great, but in no way does that ever guarantee a win. There is fierce competition in Frontier!

Not long ago a friend mentioned to me that you could play competitively in Modern in the in the Bronze leagues just using your upgraded Foundations cards. After some thought I decided to give it a try, I was hesitant as I really don't have many of the Conclave or Rebellion cards that would put me at a serious disadvantage. However, I did find I could play in Modern with moderate success with just the Foundations cards.

While playing I did notice certain cards that kept appearing against me and were absolutely destroying my teams. After some research I discovered if I wanted to be competitive I might have to invest in a couple of cards. These cards being: Torrent Sniper and Mindless Thrall as they were the ones causing the most mayhem. Fortunately neither was very expensive and I picked them up.

I do like to play a lot of magic teams, so these fit right into my gameplay like bugs in a rug!

Torrent Sniper

This card I immediately bought enough copies to create a level 2. As you can see where I have circled that bumps up the magic attack to 2. Combine that with an archon that increases magic attack levels and it's a 3, not too shabby. Plus this card has the snipe ability, what that means is that it will attack the first non melee card after the first position. It's a great way to mess with your opponent's back line! This has quickly become one of my favorite water monsters!

Mindless Thrall

This neutral card I upgraded to level 3 when I bought it. Why you may ask? Just look at the level 3 magic attack, it bumps up to a 3, combine that with an archon that increased magic attack and you have a massive 4 attack piercing through armor. As an added bonus it has phase meaning that magic attacks can miss just like melee attacks, another huge plus. In general, it just causes a lot of mayhem to your opponent's team. This has become one of my favorite monsters to use across almost all of the splinters, although it does have a hefty mana of 8, being neutral it can be used in most higher mana matches!

Marlai Singariel

As I mentioned, I do like teams with magic attack and Marlai Singariel is an archon that increases the magic attack of each monster card on your team. She's very similar to Alric Stormbringer from back in the early day of Splinterlands, and I still like using him in brawls! The one disadvantage of Marlai is she can only achieve level 4 since she is a Foundations card. They are limited in how far they can be leveled up, so you may want to keep that in mind!

Now it's time to see them in action. They really do make a devastating combination when placed under a magic magnifying archon. This will be a Modern battle with a huge mana cap of 85 and no secondary modifying rules (which I always like!)

You can see the entire battle at this link.

First off we both chose Marlai Singariel as our archon. Mine had a slight edge at level 4 vs level 3 for my opponent. From there I chose Coralforged as my tank since when he's placed in first position the next card gets reach, so I followed that with Commander Slade which is a very tough secondary tank. Now it was time to bring my new cards into action, first I placed the Torrent Sniper and then the Mindless Thrall. I finished off the team with Mystic Scaleweaver and Saltwater Mage

My opponent decided to use Commander Slade as the tank followed by Great Bear Druid. They also has a Torrent Sniper in third position followed by Mystic Scaleweaver. To round out the team they added Saltwater Mage and finished off with a Mindless Thrall, but only at level 1 as opposed to my level 3.

After one round of action my Coralforged bit the dust as did his Commander Slade.

Halfway through round 2 things weren't looking too good for my opponent. My Saltwater Mage had use the sneak attack ability to kill the opposing Mindless Thrall, and the Great Bear Druid had gone the way of the earth.

Come round 3 things weren't looking too good for my opponent as the Torrent Sniper went down for the count.

Soon only the Saltwater Mage remained and that didn't last too long...

I pulled off a nice victory in great part to my two new acquisitions: Torrent Sniper and Mindless Thrall. Both of them are great reward cards, and whenever I pull one cashing in my glint it makes me smile! Although there are many more cards in Conclave for me to take advantage of I'm glad I started here. Just keep in mind to earn maximal glint you do need some staked SPS, if you don't have any it can be rented relatively inexpensively.

I love that it cuts through armor, makes winning much easier. Torrent Sniper is a great card, I'm glad I have it at level two!

Very interesting that they are both magic monsters. I always find my luck with magic monsters to be hit or miss. Then a lot of times I get absolutely crushed by magic monsters by my opponent.

Magic has always been my favorite attack as it cuts through armor. I think it's why I've used more than the others from the get go. You really can cut apart an opponent when they are placed right. I'm constantly learning better positioning through matches, even after years of having played!
