Silver From Switzerland, a Nice Two Franc Coin!

Yesterday my good friend @coinjoe shared an old coin from the Netherlands. It was well over 400 years old, and it got me thinking I should share some more of my European collection. So I dug into my files and pulled out one I've been meaning to share for some time, a Swiss 2 Franc silver coin. I've always been a bit of a sucker for coins from Switzerland, and I usually pick them up if the price is right.
This one in particular I picked up at a jewelry shop nearby several years ago. He buys gold and silver and usually sends it off the be melted down, but when he comes across coins he thinks I might like he hangs onto to them. This was one of those that I'm glad he kept. It's not the biggest coin in the world but it is in nice condition considering it's 87 years old! It was minted in 1939, which was a very bad year for Europe as it was the start of World War II. Switzerland of course remained neutral as they always have, their geography has always made them a very hard country to invade. It's kept them out of countless wars over the years and spared them countless lives that could have been lost in the conflicts.
About the coin:

From numista.com
In it's current condition the coin is worth maybe $20, as it's far from mint condition. It may be worth more now with silver prices up, but I've not priced it in some time. It is composed of 83.5% silver and weighs in at around 10 grams. The current metal value in the coin is about $18.70, and contains 0.268 Troy ounces of silver. So this one is more a coin best stacked for it's silver content, not it's numismatic value. But it sure has a beautiful design! It was so popular that the same design was used from 1874 until 1967, that's a very long run for a coin!

Silver
Silver continues to show quite a bit of volatility. Much of it started at the beginning of the Iran conflict as market manipulators did their best to push down the price of precious metals. However, silver is still in short supply and demand far outpaces production. Eventually, this means there is only one possible result, increasing prices. If you are looking for some quick flips to make a few dollars you could use short term ups and downs to earn. But for those of us who are stackers are in for the long haul.
I've been investing in silver and gold since I was young and don't anticipate selling much of what I have in the near future. It's a a great long term strategy in my humble opinion. Here's silver over the last five days:

But to better understand the market it's better to look at the last year:

From kitco.com
Silver is up significantly and will likely end up over $100 again in the near future despite the short term volatility. It's a great time to pick up some silver and even start your own stack if you haven't yet. Remember that precious metals have been money since before recorded history and they always will be...

That will do it for today and I hoped you enjoyed the Swiss two Franc coin. I do love coins from Switzerland, they are always well done and so attractive. Please feel free to leave any comments or questions below, and as always thank you for all of your support. Have a great week everyone!

I never thought about the geography of Switzerland being a benefit against people invading that makes perfect sense my friend!😀
I have always liked collecting older coins....just think about what was happening in the World in 1939....while this coin sat in the pocket of someone!!! 🙄
Geography was their friend for a very long time. With modern warfare the advantage is done, but they still like to stay neutral. A lot happened that year and this coin was shiny and new to experience it first hand!

I think that’s why I am a big fan of Morgan silver dollars as well!
History my friend… that was once in someone’s hand!😇😊
That is a fascinating coin. I have only been in Switzerland briefly, but loved the geography and understand why that would have been a deterrent to anyone trying to invade!

Thanks! It is a beautiful country, I haven't spent too much time there either to be honest. But I enjoyed every minute of it while I was there! Those mountains are a serious deterrent to invasion!

Really cool coin from Switzerland, i have some francs but no silver at all there xD
If you find the right source they aren't too expensive, unless they are really nice then you will pay out of the nose for them! lol

What a lovely detail on the Swiss emblem, always appreciate the craftsmanship in older European coins
That does seem to be good condition for a coin that old. I like how simple but elegant the older coins are.
A simple yet timeless design. It's too bad the US hasn't stuck with some of our more beautiful coins. The old dead dude club is getting really old on our coinage and currency. It would be nice to see Liberty return or even rotating historic figures. But our currency is just so plain and boring...
Yeah, I totally agree with that!
That such a nice coin my friend, so lovely. Nad also since it is not in circulation anymore, its value will go uop for the collector int he future isn't it?

Nice one brother. It is cool you have a relationship with the local jeweler too. Since I don't really have an LCS, I should do the same.
If they buy up silver and gold they might be a good bet if they are independent. Making friends with some of the local jewelers has been a great investment as they will hang onto coins for you rather than send them off to be melted! Finding one's that will give you the coins at spot are even better, I've only found one that does that for me. Sadly, he's retiring... lol

Im gonna look into it.
I would love to get some of the silver ones, to join my gold 10 and 20
The silver isn't usually priced to badly unless you want pristine examples if you shop around. Not sure how the markets are up there in Canada though!

I hope I come across one sometime soon !PIMP
Nice share and that made me realise just how many olden European coins I used to have as a child, no idea where they went!
It's too bad you don't have them anymore. I know that feeling, some of my old coins from childhood are also missing now which really sucks!
