One of the US Mint's Brand New Quarters for 2026!
I know I have complained many times about the extremely boring circulating coins here in the United States. They have been essentially unchanged for decades or even longer in several cases. In the past the US Mint would redesign the coinage every couple of decades to keep it attractive and up to modern standards. The coins almost always featured Liberty as it was the founding principle for the nation. However, the politicians changed all that in the 1900's by placing former presidents or founding fathers on the coins. They essentially became the club of the "old dead dudes"...
George Washington, the first US president, would have fought against this with all his might. They offered to put his portrait on the coinage when he was president and he refused saying, "it was too much like a king". Alas, politicians never learn from the past or respect those who came before them...
Fortunately, as this is the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, special new designs were approved for the occasion. On July 4, 1776 the continental congress voted to approve independence from the English crown and the declaration itself was truly signed about a month later. Sometime back I shared the new dime which I absolutely love as it features Liberty, but this is one of the new quarter dollar designs that I really like. It features the Puritans who fled England and religious persecution to settle in Massachusetts.
What I like best about this coin is that it features a ship, and I am a huge fan of ship coins. I have always been a lover of the ocean and diving, especially when I get to search for sunken treasure, but that's another story... Here's the new coin design:

From APMEX.com

From numista.com
The Puritans sailed on the Mayflower to arrive in North America, and it is featured on the reverse (back) of the coin. I love the design on this one! This is a clad version of the coin up for sale on APMEX, the pure silver coins will be available later in the year. I will definitely be picking up a silver set this year!
Here are some of the other coin changes for this year. I personally like the dime, the Mayflower quarter, and the half dollar with Liberty. The others I'm not such a big fan... I am surprised that they are including the penny as it has been officially discontinued, but apparently the design was approved prior to the cancellation order.

coinnews.net
There is a current push by President Trump to produce a commemorative $250 bill with his picture on it as well. I am all in favor of a $250 bill, as $100 is almost worthless anymore. However, why not put Liberty on there? I don't think we need a picture of the current or even past presidents on it...

theaustralian.com.au
I will pass on that bill as is, but if they replace the picture with Liberty, I'm all for it! Fortunately, as the law currently stands, living presidents aren't allowed on currency, so the Trump design will never actually be produced.

Mayflower

britannica.com
The Mayflower was an English square rigged sailing vessel that is most famous for having transported the first Puritans to North America. They were attempting to escape religious persecution they had suffered in England and subsequently in Holland after fleeing England. It was illegal to worship outside the norms of the Church of England at the time. Although no one knows for sure exactly what the Mayflower looked like, there are historical records of it's dimensions. It carried 102 passengers and 30 crew from Holland to Cape Cod, Massachusetts arriving on Nov. 21, 1620 after a two month journey over mostly rough seas. Quarters were extremely tight with only room for a bed per room. Remarkably, only one person perished during the journey.
Their timing for arrival couldn't have been worse. They arrived in time for winter and were grossly unprepared. Fortunately, the local Wampanoag tribe helped them gather food to survive the brutal winter. However, half of those who arrived died from starvation and disease that winter. For their one year anniversary those who had survived celebrated with the local Wampanoag people and it became what is now referred to as the first Thanksgiving.
Prior to embarking on the dangerous journey to the Americas the group all agreed on the Mayflower Compact, an arrangement where they would all help each other survive and defend one another against any aggressive indigenous tribes. Thus the appearance on the coin.

That will wrap up my post for this Sunday, I do hope you enjoyed seeing the new coin and learning a bit more about the Puritans and the Mayflower. Please feel free to leave any comments or questions below, and as always thank you for all of your support. It's deeply appreciated! Have a great rest of your weekend everyone!

It is fascinating to see how numismatic design can revive national history. Featuring the Mayflower and the Puritans on the new quarter to commemorate the United States Semiquincentennial is a beautiful and detailed tribute for lovers of ship-themed coins and colonial history.
The reverse of this Coin is awesome, my friend!
How fitting that they have the mayflower featured on the new design!👍🤗
I just wish they would start producing new coins yearly with new all new designs. Liberty or historical figures would be great, but the same old coins are really boring... The Mayflower design is great, definitely one to add a few rolls to your collection!
I guess that’s why I enjoy collecting older silver US coinage. it’s not just the silver the designs were so much more intricate such as on Morgan dollars or Mercury dimes!😇😊
I'd love to get may hands on ones of these 2026 US 25 Cent Mayflowers even if is just clad. Until then I'll be satisfied with the 2020 Rwanda Mayflower which is not quite the same in spirit.

The Rwanda coin is still really pretty! Once banks start carrying the new quarter rolls I'll be buying up a few of the Mayflower ones for sure. The silver set is going to be expensive though, over $200 this year...

There’s no Dollar amount on the Note… In my opinion, it’s just another clue for what’s heading our way… Our Silver Certificates will be denominated in Cents, not Dollars…
That bill won't be produced as is since Trump is on it. They may make one, hopefully it will state dollars at least. The $100 can buy you almost nothing anymore, it's time for a larger bill for circulation. Too bad Nixon took us off the gold standard, it's killing our currency...
Larger numbers won’t do any good… Germany found that out… We need smaller numbers that are 100% backed by circulating Silver and Gold Coins…
Haha, sorry about that... how boring! I'm glad the new special designs were approved.
I also love the ocean and diving, and I'd love to be on a cruise on the high seas.
A $250 bill with Donald Trump's image would be a really ugly bill. Haha.
Thanks for the information; I did learn a little about the Puritans and the Mayflower. Take care, and I hope you keep bringing us more coins to learn about.

It would be nice to see new coins every year with fresh designs. No more old presidents. Maybe historical figures or Liberty, even national landmarks... That bill would be very ugly! Espero que producen efectivo de $250 como ya $100 no se puede comprar mucho ya. El dollar no tiene el mismo valor como en dias pasados.
