Old Silver Peruvian 1/5 Sol Coin From 1888

Happy Wednesday everyone! I hope the day is treating you well so far. It's beautiful day here in southern California. Days like this remind me why I moved her in the first place, despite the crowded freeways and high taxes. It really is a wonderful place to live!

Today I'm sharing a coin not so much because it's special or all that uncommon, but only for it's date. This 1/5 Sol coin from Peru was minted in 1888, yes that is a lot of 8's! It also happens to be the favorite year collected by my good friend @silversaver888 . I thought she might appreciate seeing it! Have a look:

About the coin:

From numista.com

From a coin collectors point of view this one really isn't all that special. I picked it up years ago and I can't recall where, but at some point it was cleaned which greatly reduced it's value. But it does have 90% silver content and the bullion value is worth about $5.56 today. From a collector it might bring in $8 if I were lucky, but cleaned coins are generally avoided by serious collectors. A cleaned coin is always worth much less than a coin not damaged by cleaning.

But the date is very cool, three 8's are lucky after all! It also has the Peruvian coat of arms on the reverse (back) of the coin. I've always found it cool that they had the vicuña included. It's a unique animal, so I decided to share a bit about them!

Vicuña

rcrperu.com

The vicuña is an animal related to camels that lives in the high mountains of the Andes in South America. They are mostly found at elevations of 10,500 to 15,700 feet (3,200 to 4,800 meters) in Peru, Chile, Bolivia, and Argentina. They were hunted to near extinction by the 1960's with only about 6,000 individuals remaining. Conservation programs have allowed the species to recover to over 350,000 today.

They do resemble the alpaca, which appears to have descended from the vicuña. Their wool is highly sought after due to it's fine nature and insulating properties. After all, they do live in very high elevations so they have adapted to survive very cold weather. The wool is used in everything from socks to suits and is as fine as cashmere.

It's no wonder they are on the coat of arms of Peru, they are a very interesting species. I've never seen one in the wild in all my years of living in South America. It would be a great experience though!

That will do it for my post for this Wednesday. I hope you enjoyed it! Please feel free to leave any comments or questions below. Thank you everyone for all of your support, it is greatly appreciated. Have a great day everyone!

I can see you rolling your eyes, but as a very very young coin collector (approx 8 years old), I cleaned my fair share of coins Lol🙄😇
Kids will be kids Lol!🤣
I am sure @silversaver888 will love this 1888 dated coin as well!👍😊

I did too not knowing any better! I used an eraser on Indian head pennies to make them shiny, but in retrospect it killed the value. But kids are kids!

That’s very creative Lol!😇
I’m trying to remember if I did that as well!☺️
It really did make the coins look shiny!🤣

Oh, I truly appreciate it, @thebighigg, Thank you!!! You know that I have been collecting 1888 coins. And Peruvian coins are beautiful! I have an Un Sol and an 1888, it is quite "dirty", and if I can get to it... I don't know if I should clean it or not (not abrasive, gentle washing with a soft brush only)! But I do love the Seated Liberty, which is featured on all denomination coins during this period.

I thought you would appreciate seeing it, even though it's a cleaned coin. I am always hesitant to do anything to a coin, if you ever try to get it graded and they suspect it's been cleaned they mark it as cleaned genuine.

I love the Sol coins from Peru, I've picked up a lot over the years because they are just so pretty!

There are some in Chimborazo region I think, I've heard of them before. Not as famous as Alpaca, but still quite known.

That's awesome! They like high elevations I know, I would have to acclimatize my body before going past 3,050 meters. I'm not as young as I once was... lol

Yeah, it's something to get used to. Many expats totally underestimate the height, and are then forced to move to the coast or back to the US :-D

I have never know that cleaning the coin can reduce the value. but why it happen? is it becuase its lost its usage mark?

No, it's just that collectors want coins in the raw state. Completely untouched even though they make look dingy and old. Cleaning a coin can take it's value from $10K to $500, most people don't realize that when they find a rare coin.

We've been having some amazing weather too finally. High 70s and low 80s during the day 40s and 50s at night. It's so fantastic. I hope it sticks around for a while.

Nice to hear the weather is cooperating there too. Hopefully it will stick around awhile before it decides to start getting cold. On the bright side the good old lawn mower will go away for winter! lol

From the second biggest exporter of silver after Mexico.
The portrayal of seated Liberty is what attracted me to this Peruvian silver One Sol. Every south American country had a different version. I'm glad to have this specimen. A coin show find!

That is a pretty one! It's one of my favorite coin designs from South America. I have a lot of them some nicer that others, but I think they're a great coin to invest in, and some are very expensive in high grades!
